“if you love something, let it go. if you don’t love something, definitely let it go. basically just drop everything, who cares.” FATHER: aditya sharma can be described at best as a hard-working and ambitious man, and at worst as a strict and no-nonsense father. he was a half-blood wizard who was a hufflepuff at hogwarts, and he strove to achieve top marks but always fell short because although he revised for countless hours and worked incredibly hard in all of his lessons, there were students in his year who were brighter, more naturally intelligent, and street smart and book smart, which gave them a clear advantage when it came to excelling academically and professionally. aditya’s marks were still above average, but not the best, something which haunted him year after year. he aspired to work a high-end job, perhaps as an official at the ministry, but being beaten academically by other students throughout his school career broke the overly ambitious part of him and provoked something else, a resentful feeling that he deserved and was entitled to better than what he was getting. he didn’t believe that everything should have been handed to him, of course, as he still recognized the importance of hard work in achieving success, but he grew to lower his goals to a more realistic level, opting for a simple office job to start out his career after graduating hogwarts. he eventually worked his way up in the ministry, but this occurred after his marriage and several years after the birth of his first child, varun. he has always pressured his son to do better than him, to work extremely hard and make something of his life, but has consistently been disappointed by the results, as varun has never paid much attention to his father’s advice for as long as they can both remember. varun still cannot take his father seriously in the slightest when he is forced to listen to his lectures that all basically say the same thing: you’re a failure. you’re a disappointment. you’re a disgrace. varun knows what to expect, having grown used to it ever since his teenage years, and he hopes his father will sooner rather than later take the hint that his bitter words have absolutely no influence on him. MOTHER: kaveri gupta was a muggle thrown into an arranged marriage by her parents when she was eighteen. she could not object to the course of her life being clearly defined for her before she had even reached her twenties because she had two younger sisters in her family who also needed to get married when they got around to being her age, so she had to comply with family tradition and demands for their sake. if she didn’t agree to an arranged marriage for whatever reason, it would tarnish her family for good, as hardly any family would be willing to marry their son to her younger sisters if she herself, being the oldest, ran off to pursue an independent life at her own pace. she had her first child, varun, at the age of twenty, which officially limited her chances at being anything aside from a housewife, at least for a while. due to his father’s average-income job and his mother staying at home full-time, varun grew up in a modest household. he never resented his parents for this, as he didn’t realize, for the most part, that there was any other way children his age grew up. his childhood was the only example he had, and he was perfectly content with not being bought the latest and most expensive toys and gadgets, because his mother’s love during his early years was more than enough for him. kaveri did love varun a lot, as the entirety of her days were devoted to him, and it was a breath of fresh air for her to unconditionally care for someone other than her husband. aditya treated her well, and they did grow to love and respect one another over the years, but there was nothing particularly special about their relationship, no spark that anyone could see developing, so they bonded over their mutual adoration for their son. however, as varun grew older, especially into his teenage years, his mother began to notice changes in his behavior as he matured, having to face the unfortunate reality that varun and his father had a lot more in common than either of them would ever willingly admit. it was so clear to her - the arrogance, the unbelievable temper when it was ignited, the casual disregard of anyone else’s opinion of their character - that she was left stunned at times, confused that anyone could possibly overlook the similarities between them. but then again, she did know the two of them better than anyone else in the world, so she had the familiarity required to make these observations. kaveri has never felt the need to specifically lecture her son about anything - she knows all of his flaws and weaknesses, not ignoring them, but not directly addressing them either, because she leaves that generally condescending and belittling task to her husband. however, the one warning she has given to varun in recent years is don’t turn into your father. be the better man, to which he always scoffs, kisses her on the cheek, and tells her confidently that he is nothing like his father and never will be. SISTER: priyanka sharma came into the world when varun was five, which was oddly a mouthful for him at the start, so he affectionately shortened it to priya instead, calling her priya to this day and getting considerably more offended than need be when someone aside from him follows his example. he doted on her from the day she was born, making a habit of following his mother around and observing how the whole childcare thing was done because he never wanted to be separated from his sister, as she was a new playmate and meant a lot to him. as they both grew up, he involved her with whatever he was doing at the time, looking after her protectively but also being jokingly aggressive with her by pulling her hair and being ruthless whenever they played sports together outside, which he soon realized was frowned upon by the adults in their lives because apparently he was treating her like a brother when she was a sister, the point being that she was a girl and he should have treated her more gently and excluded her from certain things because she wasn’t a boy. varun never gave this much consideration, choosing to not alter his behavior because he had too much fun with his baby sister - who was not a baby anymore, but he never stopped referring to her or thinking of her as such. one of the most difficult things he ever went through was dealing with leaving her to go to hogwarts when he received his acceptance letter, as he’d grown extremely used to having her around to play with and talk to and teach new things that his mother had taught him but he wanted the responsibility of filling priya in on himself. being away from her actually made him love her more, though, and whenever he wrote to his mother he never missed out on an opportunity to ask how she was doing. he was in his sixth-year when she finally came to hogwarts, yet the thought that he would be graduating soon, giving them less time to both be at wizarding school together, did not overjoy him any less about her arrival, nor did the thought of having her around and fondly introducing her to all of his friends embarrass him like it would most other sixteen year-old boys. she was sorted into ravenclaw and he soon after discovered how much they differed - it had always been at the back of his mind during summers and other holidays, but it was much easier to note the distinctions between them when he saw her around at hogwarts. she was much more reserved and collected than he was, as she prefered to keep to herself and it took a lot to get her angry, and she was also much more clever and quick at thinking on her feet than he was. varun is fully aware that she is the conventionally better sibling, as she has everything going for her - she is pretty, shyer than him but still outgoing enough to make friends, and she demonstrated early on, from what he noted in his sixth and seventh-years at hogwarts, that she was extremely intelligent and hard-working, and unapologetic about both traits to top it all off, giving her a quiet confidence that left her fellow classmates regarding her in either awe or disdain and made their parents immensely pleased, since she wrote home to discuss her outstanding marks on a regular basis. he knows that she blossomed into everything that their parents, especially their father, had wished he had been, and he doesn’t resent her for that at all - if anything, it makes him even more proud of her, always urging her to be the best, because he knows she is highly capable of it and she deserves a lot better than he does. PERSONALITY: varun is not someone who can easily hide his feelings - if he’s in a good mood, you’ll know it, and if he’s angry, you’ll especially know it, as he is very short-tempered and can lose his cool in a matter of minutes depending on the scenario. that being said, he isn’t by any means constantly in a terrible mood - in fact, he tends to be smiling or laughing or both at any given point, even in what other people would consider tense, awkward, or otherwise serious situations, due to his inability to take anything seriously. he doesn’t plan ahead or worry or get anxious about things because he never has, as he’s always just taken whatever life throws at him day by day and tried to make the most of it. although a lot of his peers immediately jump to the conclusion that he is irresponsible, unambitious, and careless because of his easy-going attitude, he is not necessarily as nonchalant as they believe him to be - he does care about certain things and people, and when he does he has no trouble showing it, but his general apathy and disregard for the rules are very apparent as well, leading to his reputation of being reckless and self-centered (both of which are true to a certain extent). people are sometimes also put off by the way he can make almost anything into a joke, turning their noses up to how he seems to think life itself is a joke. on the other hand, those who enjoy his company are the ones who find themselves drawn in to his sense of humor, outspoken nature, and, for lack of a better word, talent at having fun - because it has become a talent of sorts at this point, being the self-proclaimed center of attention in group settings and chuckling at the fact that most people who know him either love him or hate him, as there’s hardly a middle ground and he is fine with that. despite insisting that he is not anything like his father, varun shares a lot of similarities with him - he does secretly recognize the significance of hard work and that it can play a role in improving one’s conditions. this is why the few people that varun genuinely dislikes are those who get everything handed to them on a silver platter, who don’t have to work at all to maintain their lives and luxuries. he’ll openly admit that he isn’t the most motivated person himself, but he does pride himself on his occasional bout of determination and work ethic - not to prove his worth to his father or anyone else, as some might think, but to prove to himself that he can be better than a lot of the people who don’t even try. HOGWARTS YEARS: varun was sorted into gryffindor without any hesitation from the sorting hat, and he settled in ridiculously well for obvious reasons. he was a gryffindor through and through, having no trouble finding himself in multiple detentions for various stunts he and his friends would carry out. he was very sociable, being able to find cause to chat with anyone about anything if they appeared to be interested in listening to him, and he had a knack for making people who seemed down happy after simply talking to them. his professors grew tired of his antics after the first couple years, as it was obvious he didn’t plan on taking them seriously - many were actually frustrated with the lack of effort he put into his coursework, as they had read his writing and had faith that he wasn’t not-intelligent, he was essentially just a bad student that had the potential of jumping from average to above average if he spent even half as much time revising as he did joking around. varun was content with being average, though, regardless of the pressure from his father to work hard and excel and succeed, all of which were apparently mutually exclusive. he didn’t have any ambitions to work his way up in the ministry or even work at the ministry or any other professional place of employment, for that matter, so he didn’t see any point to throwing himself into his studies. he didn’t really know what he wanted to do after graduation, and didn’t spend any time thinking about it like a lot of his classmates did - during his hogwarts years, being a student was all he could think about even if he wasn’t exactly a model student, because he just wanted to socialize and have fun and enjoy his time there while he was there rather than being concerned about the future. he reckoned that the future was still the future, not the present, and he would improvise and figure it out once he got there. he drank at parties, which he attempted to keep a secret from his parents for a while because of their cultural disapproval towards alcohol, but it didn’t work for long because his mother always ended up catching him his lies. he also took up smoking around fifth-year, this time outright informing his mother of it and only pleading that priya not find out because he didn’t want it to negatively impact her, as she had idolized him over the years. he only smokes on and off nowadays, not nearly as often as when he was in hogwarts and mostly as a means of relieving stress from time to time. he had his fair share of casual flings, losing his virginity in fifth-year to a girl he actually kind of loved, but it never turned into anything more and he continued to have mostly meaningless hook-ups following it. CURRENTLY: varun is working as a bartender and still living at home, much to the disgust of his father, but he uses the money he saves from not having to pay rent for his own place to buy his mother whatever nice things he can that she won’t ask his father for. varun adores his mother, and she and priya are the only two people he would do anything and drop everything for. he plans on moving out eventually, he’s just not sure when yet - he won’t own up to it, but part of the reason he’s still at home is because he can get a laugh or two out of the look on his father’s face every time he walks past him. his sister is about to go into her fourth-year at hogwarts, which is mildly worrying for him because she’s fourteen and surely there are tons of boys who probably fancy her. he remembers being a fourteen year-old boy and is not entirely comfortable with the thought of her being exposed to that.
