LYSANDER NEWT SCAMANDER
So, Mr Scamander, thank you for joining us t- are you alright? Yeah, shit, sorry, I just - just dropped my mic, one sec... how do you - this thing is so tiny, how does it... oh, okay, got it. Sorry. What were you saying? Thank you for being with us today. You're welcome. I was in London anyway, so I don't mind. Well, we appreciate it. You're busy these days, if I'm correct? Word is it you've taken up your dad's job, studying magical creatures? Yeah, I have. Although he's more in the line of just discovering new ones where he could; I like looking at the ones he's already found and learning everything I can about them. They're pretty cool, you know? We found this reptile the other week that looks like it could be a distant relative of dragons - it's totally fireproof, right, and its got these funny extensions on its back that would never carry it through the air, of course, but they quite possibly could have been wings, and - I'm going to interrupt you there - don't give all its secrets away! Your competitors might steal your ideas! Oh, I don't mind. I'm not doing this to get my name known or anything. I just want to learn what I can, you know? I'm not big on people in general so it's not really a huge thing for me that people recognise me and stuff. Let's talk about that some more. You had plenty of friends in Hogwarts, right? Um, yeah, I guess? I mean, I've known the Weasleys and the Potters almost since birth, and they're a really cool crowd. I don't think any of them consider me a best friend or anything, but I get on fine with them. Lorcan says I'm a nutter when I'm comfortable with people, and I always seem to end up doing and saying weird stuff when I'm around them, so I guess I am close to a lot of them. The girls frighten a bit from time to time because most girls do, but I like them better than most. Dominique I like especially - everyone I talk to says they're really frightened of her, I don't know why. I mean she's pretty mean to me but I'm fairly sure it's only because she cares. You said the girls frighten you? Why's that? I don't really know. Girls always have. They're so... well they're so pretty, you know? They do all this cute stuff but then they can flip and they're suddenly terrifying and they're just really unpredictable. It freaks me out. Lorcan's so good at talking to girls and impressing them; whenever I'm in conversations with them I'm terrified I'm going to say something really stupid or embarrassing. I can't help it, it just kind of comes out. We're both lucky you're a guy, or I'd just be sitting here like a total idiot. I don't mean to, I want to be so cool and swish and smooth like a bunch of the guys in my year at Hogwarts were. But, nope, I can face up to a Hungarian Horntail or take eight krups at once for a walk but you put me near a girl and it's like I'm the biggest coward who ever lives. So you've never had a girlfriend? Or boyfriend? No. I'm not interested in guys that way, and I doubt any would want to date me anyway. As for girls... I'm pretty sure I've never even had a crush on one. I don't really know any of them well enough, you know? I mean, they intimidate me just by being around, but I think I'd want to get to know one really well before I developed any feelings for her. And obviously that's probably not going to happen, since I spend a lot of time travelling for my job now, and besides you kind of have to be brave enough to talk to somebody in order to get to know them, huh? A few girls have started flirting with me in the past, but that's only because they thought I was my brother. Okay, so you mentioned travel just there. You've only been out of Hogwarts a couple of months, have you had much time since then to travel? Apparation makes travel a lot easier, but no I haven't done much so far. Just around Europe mostly, I found that lizard I was talking about in Latvia. I travelled a lot in the holidays, anyway, and when Lorcan and I were small our parents took us all sorts of great places. I loved it, that much travelling, you know? But I just got offered a steady job here in England, and I'm so tempted to take it.... Ooh, what kind of job? Have you heard of safari parks? They're this Muggle thing. They have a bunch of exotic animals wandering around in fields and you drive through them. This guy is setting up a wizarding version in Cumbria, and he's offered me a job there. I'd help out but I could also research and bring back more creatures. It would be awesome. I'm not sure I'd be any good at the technical magical stuff - which they're going to need a lot of, to keep some of those animals in - the most I can do is keep myself alive when I'm out and about, which is probably why I bombed my NEWTs so thoroughly. Yes, I heard about that. All Ts, wasn't it? Well, my sources tell me you actually have to turn up to exams to gain acceptable grades. I got an O in Care of Magical Creatures, obviously - ninety-nine percent, actually, and I only dropped a couple of marks because the asshole examiner didn't know that I'd found out about salamanders' mating habits being slightly different from the official version in my grandfather's book - but, yeah, pretty much ploughed the rest. I did go to some of them, but a lot of it was theoretical stuff, you know? And, like, I know a spell will stun a Re'em, I don't need to know how or why it does it. Fair enough! So, tell me a bit about what it was like for you growing up. You were always on the move, I think? Yeah, we moved around a lot. I liked it, it was always something new and exciting, and I always had Lorcan so it didn't really matter what else went on. I was super interested in what our parents were doing anyway - I don't think he was so much so it was harder on him. I think it was a happy childhood though, yeah. I liked it. I wouldn't change it for the world. So Hogwarts must have been a big change? Coming to one place with so many other people? Yeah, Hogwarts was pretty hard for me, especially when Lorcan went into Hufflepuff and I was stuck all by myself in Ravenclaw. I still have no clue why the hat put me there, I'm not even close to academic. But I've always been okay with my own company, and I had Lorcan in a lot of my classes. Plus they still let me do a lot of what I wanted - I had a lot of detentions I think, but I didn't go to many - so apart from the odd stern talk from my Head of House I was free to roam the castle grounds and stuff. And the Forbidden Forest was awesome, I haven't seen a place so full of magical creatures before or since. So you weren't an academic whizz, despite being in Ravenclaw? Merlin's pants no. I think I missed more lessons than I attended. Who wants to learn about Defence Against the Dark Arts anyway? Who indeed. So what happened during your time at Hogwarts, apart from not studying? Any parties, or that kind of thing? Maybe surprisingly, I actually don't mind the odd party. I'm hardly the kind of guy who's going to be at one every night, and nightclubs are my own personal idea of hell, but a house party with a few mates and beers is usually a lot of fun. I don't get invited to many, obviously, since I don't have a large social circle, but I enjoy the ones I do go to - or that Lorcan drags me too. That's usually how I end up at them. I tend to duck out pretty early on unless I drink, and then I'm in it until the bitter end. Sometimes I break stuff - my own arm, even, on one memorable occasion. I don't mean to, it's just that drunk me does the kind of reckless shit sober me does when out after dangerous creatures, and drunk me doesn't have nearly good enough reflexes to pull those kind of stunts off. Hence the breakages. How did you break your arm? I'm actually quite proud of that. I had about eight beers and then climbed to the top of a nearby zipwire thing, in a Muggle outdoor adventure place, and attempted to use the zipwire. I made it quite a long way down, obviously, else I'd be dead and not talking to you right now. Impressive... I think? Well, it's a good story to tell for laughs. Yep. Anything else from your time at school that makes a good story? Well, I smuggled a dog in. This little fluffy spaniel - I found him wandering around at home, obviously a stray, and I just didn't want to leave him behind when I had to go back to school after the Christmas holidays in Sixth Year. So I took him with me. I got away with having him there for a solid eighteen months, which personally I'm pretty proud of. He's a good dog, though, generally obedient, so it wasn't really hard for me to get him to behave and stay hidden. Cute. What's his name? Gordon Brown, after the old Muggle prime minister. 'Cause he's always really grumpy, right? And he makes this face just like I've seen that guy do in videos and stuff. Mostly he just gets called Donny, which is a little less attention-grabbing to yell in public. Alright then. So, what happened between leaving Hogwarts and today? Quite a bit, I suppose. Lorcan and I got a place together, in London - he's working at the Tamarisk Tree, on Diagon Alley, you know? He likes it, I think, and I love living with him again. It's like being kids. We're pretty responsible for two teenage guys, too - we had to be, with parents as preoccupied as ours - so we keep the place neat and tidy on the most part. Or we try to. So yeah basically my time has just been travelling here and there and compiling a lot of research. I mentioned the safari place earlier? I met the guy who offered me the job in Austria; we were both after a Selkie there. The more I think about it the more inclined I am to take the job, to be honest with you. He was a decent guy and it would be nice to stay in the country for a while. Right, well, good luck with that! Our time's all up - is there anything else you want to add? No, I think I'm good. Thanks. You're welcome. Have a nice afternoon. You too. ALIAS AGE ZONE |
