EVIE CRESSIDA FLINT
[content warning for mental illness] Diary Entry #546: The Pre-History Twenty years of age is what she was, when Alya Montague was married to Marcus Flint. It came as no surprise, because Cressida Montague had long before decided which house her youngest, most precious daughter would marry into. Determined to make a queen out of her only girl, Cressida brought up Alya to be the perfect lady. She was taught to play the piano from the time she was three, could converse in French and Greek (Cressida's mother tongue) by the time she was seven, and was following in her brothers' footsteps to be betrothed by the time she turned fourteen. Having been sorted in Slytherin , when she went to Hogwarts, Alya was brought up around elitist children of further elitist purebloods and children of those who were quasi-shadowing the Dark Lord. This made her into a very stern woman, more stern than her own mother was. While Cressida was strict, yet wholeheartedly loving, Alya became a strict and merciless woman who left no room for mistakes or second chances. Cressida clearly had money and reputation on her mind when she approached the Flints - old friends - with the possibility of a betrothal. After all, Marcus' older sister was married to Alya's older brother, and Alya's oldest brother was already onto having a beautiful baby boy, with his wife from an influential Greek family. But the Flints admired Alya's rigidity and attitude, as much as they admired her bloodline, intelligence and inheritance. She would make a lovely wife to Marcus. After being allowed a few years to date different women and "get it out if his system", as his mother, Moira, used to say, Marcus and Alya finally began courting. While Marcus had been out and around with women of all status', Alya had been focusing on studying law. By the age of twenty one (a year after their marriage), Marcus and Alya both had respectable jobs at the Ministry of Magic. Marcus had joined the Department of International Affairs, and Alya was given a job by the side of a member of the Wizengamot. They were twenty one when they had their first child, Jemima Alya Flint. Taking after her mother in the looks department, with her soft brown hair and wide green eyes, the couple couldn't have been any happier. Alya took a maternity to leave to care for Jemima (or Her Jem, as she loved to call her). If you'd have asked me, I'd have thought she did it out of a loving motherly gesture. But as it turned out, strict Alya only did so because she didn't trust any tutors or nurses to bring up Jemima the way a Montague - Flint daughter ought to be raised. Jemima was put through the same cycles of dance, music and languages which Alya had been put through as a child. When Jemima was five, Alya gave birth to her second daughter, Evie. Evie took after her father in the looks department, coarse black hair and sparkly grey eyes. When she turned into a teenager, she used to dye it brown and blonde from time to time, but generally she enjoyed her looks. She was a very loud child, and not as obedient as Alya would've liked. Marcus never fully bothered to worry about Evie because he himself had been a loud kid (who got scolded a lot for it). He promised Alya that Evie would grow out of it. But Alya would not have any of the waiting to do. The more effort she spent on Evie meant the less effort she could spend on honing Jemima, and improving her budding law career. Besides, by the time Evie was two, Alya was having another baby boy, Alastair, who needed her attention as well. Evie grew up to be the kind of girl who did not make many friends. She used to stay to herself a lot, despite the numerous play dates organized for her. Whether it was with a boy or a girl, she always let the kids play with her toys and tea sets and focused on drawing or talking to Fiona (her imaginary friend). While she was introduced to the arts and languages, as was routine, she used to focus more on what she wanted to. It wasn't uncommon for her to get a slap on the wrist for doodling on her parchment instead of translations; or for her to disrupt a class because Fiona had to do something. Evie's parents indulged her friendship with "Fiona" - who was slowly growing in her role in Evie's life - for a month or so, before they told her that she was done playing games and had to study more. As a result of being told to say bye to Fiona, Evie accidentally set fire to the curtains during a Ministry ball being hosted at the Flint Manor (She was four, and this was the first inkling of magic she'd ever shone). Although most of the guests appeared to be good sports about it, and marveled at the magic shown by the incredibly young child, Alya was not pleased. She excused herself from the party, and hit Evie until she was in tears and apologizing for the disruption. Fiona was unheard from after that. Eventually, Evie forgot about her altogether. She did whatever her mother said, and when she didn't, she silently accepted the punishments given to her. Cressida and Marcus were both concerned by the alarming amount of times Evie ran to her room in tears, from being hit for the simplest of things. The two of them addressed their concerns to Alya, but Alya would have none of it. She simply told her mother to stay out of how she raised her children, and told her husband that while his input was appreciated, she was raising her child in the right way. When Evie was six years old, Jemima received her acceptance owl to Hogwarts. The entire family threw a party for the event, and the next morning Alya and Cressida took Jemima and Evie shopping to celebrate and buy school supplies. Unfortunately, not all four of them made it back. As they were getting out of the Leaky Cauldron to the Muggle side of London (a nice walk in the pleasant weather is what they had in mind), Evie got distracted by a shop display and ran to it ahead of her family. Jemima, determined to be the responsible older sister, ran after her. At the same time, a London taxi driver lost control of the car, which swerved off the road and onto the pavement, hitting Jemima. She died on impact. The grief which enveloped the family was overwhelming. The grandparents visited a lot more to look after the children. Evie cried a lot (blaming herself for the entire incident), four year old Alastair didn't fully understand why Jemima wouldn't be coming back and Gwendolyn, who was almost a year old, needed a lot of time and caring and didn't even recognize the loss. Marcus locked himself up in his office and spent nights at the Ministry, just working. He took on a lot more traveling assignments for the Department, to get some space. Alya was distraught and wouldn't even come out of her room, many a times. She couldn't comprehend the loss of Her Jem, and the thought of such a preposterous Muggle invention taking her daughter's life. A few weeks after Jemima's funeral, Evie continued to cry herself to sleep and one night, when she couldn't take it anymore, Alya walked into her room and hit her until Evie didn't have the strength to cry anymore. Evie never cried over Jemima again. Instead she started focusing on the tutoring she was being given, and observing her mother on how to become the perfect pureblood lady of a house. She paid attention to the languages, she started learning how to play the cello and she even promised herself that one day she'd become a lawyer, like her mother. She even started helping look after Alastair and Gwendolyn. She, without realizing, attempted to fill the gap Jemima had left as she slowly started lose memory of Jemima, herself. Some time after her eleventh birthday, Evie got her owl for Hogwarts. This was a very morose moment for the entire family, because receiving owls seemed to have become some ill omen. They feared for Evie's wellbeing at Hogwarts. In fact, for the first few months, Evie had to write home twice a day to reassure her parents that everything was alright. She didn't fully understand this fear because Jemima's death had become a blank memory to her. But she didn't dare question it. Evie was sorted into Gryffindor, much to her family's embarrassment. Although they didn't voice this opinion - due to the change in outlook and prejudice over the years - it was clear that their old age beliefs had led them to the disappointment of having their child in the house which was known for being stupidly brave. Evie herself didn't understand why the Hat put her in Gryffindor of all places. She wasn't brave enough. Neither was she cunning enough to be Slytherin, nor clever enough to be Ravenclaw. She supposed the hat had chosen her to be in Gryffindor only because she deeply wished not to be a Hufflepuff, where she ought to have been as the misfit she was. - Fiona Kennitt Patient File: Evie Cressida Flint Name: Evie Cressida Flint DOB: May 14th, 2002 Age: 22 Sex: Female Sexual Orientation: Identifies as heterosexual. Good afternoon. Evie: Good afternoon. T: It's been very long, hasn't it? Your mother informed me that you've had to cancel the past few sessions due to travel. E: Yes, I went to America. T: That's wonderful! How was it? E: It was alright. T: Why don't you tell me more about the trip? E: I went to New York City, Boston, Philadelphia. Then we went over to the other coast, visited San Diego and Los Angeles. We took a trip to Las Vegas, then the Grand Canyon and returned home. T: We? E: I went with Alastair, Harrison and Harrison's sister, Helena. T: Your friend from school, Harrison Vaisey? He was always mentioned before. How are things with him. I hear some good news is on the way. E: *smiles, a little shyly* Yes. We're getting married soon. We got engaged, before we took the trip. T: Congratulations! Are you happy? E: Very much so. This is what I always wanted. T: Is it, really? You've never mentioned that before. E: Well…I've always wanted a family someday. And I've always been told by mum how Harrison and I are to be wed, someday. It's a good thing I've known him from school, otherwise I wouldn't be as happy as I am now. We're good friends, and I really do like Helena. I'll have a nice sister-in-law. T: That's really amazing, Evie. E: I'm meeting Harrison later today. We're supposed to be deciding on wedding things, with our Mums. Olivia - his mum - is so sweet and nice, and Mum and her make such a good team! Olivia gives brilliant ideas, and Mum is always the one making sure it gets done in the best way possible. They both have such eyes for details. T: I hope Harrison won't mind me keeping you here for very long. E: *doesn't reply* T: Evie? Are you alright? E: *doesn't reply* T: *clears throat* Evie….Evie… Evie? E: Huh? T: Where were you just now? E: What do you mean? T: I was just asking if Harrison won't mind you staying here a bit longer. We haven't talked in long, and there's a few things I wanted to ask. E: Oh, he doesn't know I'm here. We mustn't tell him. He thinks I'm a bit spacey as it is…if he knew I was a mental patient - T: Evie, please don't refer to yourself so harshly. There's no shame in seeking help. E: No. He mustn't know; not until we've married. Mum told me so. T: *sigh* Yes, dear. I'll talk to your mother about that. But, let's not discuss that right now. Let's talk more of your trip. What did you like best? E: The people are so different! It's a little daunting. It was very amusing, though. I shopped a lot, and we ate at some nice places, took some brilliant tours. It feels like a blur. A very happy blur. T: *pauses* A blur, you say? E: *frowns* Oh no, I remember everything from the trip, I really do! I didn't mean blurry as in memory wise. Blurry as in it all went so fast. Please don't look into it, please! I really do remember everything, the whole three weeks! T: *adds note to notepad* Evie does not remember the full three and a half weeks of the trip to America. Speak to Alya Flint ASAP. Consult Healer Green about increased dosage.*looks up* That's wonderful, Evie. Really. E: *sighs in relief* Can I go now? I'm getting late. T: Of course. Do enjoy yourself. E: I will! Interview Tape #21: Are you Evie? dated: May 6th, 2024 Therapist: Hello Evie. How are you, today? Evie: *scoffs* I could sue you for this, but I don't think you'd be able to afford that sort of loss. T: I'm sorry, what do you mean? E: You're really lucky I'm not some sad self esteem patient, or something, because mixing up names like that would be a real pin to the ego and confidence balloon. T: *pauses* E: *raises an eyebrow* T: I apologize…Fiona? "Fiona": It's alright, not a problem. I suppose I should be used it. It's not the first time you've done this. I can't help it that Evie and I can pass for twins. T: You're right…that is rather sad for the two of you. "F": Does Evie know that you talk to me about her? I don't think she'd be very flattered by that. T: I discuss it with her sometimes, but it often doesn't come up. "F": Well, obviously. Her mother doesn't allow her to talk to me much. We used to be best friends, and now…it's the elitist bullshit. I'm telling you. If I was pureblood and as rich as her, then we'd be allowed to be best friends forever. She's a real sweetheart, even if she is a little knocked in the head, you know? T: You mention that a lot, Fiona. Why do you think Evie's "knocked"? She feels perfectly fine most of the time. "F": Did she tell you that? You didn't believe her did you? I hope not, because she's a real goner, then. She isn't even allowed to get a job, poor kid. You know her mother forbids her to go anywhere to apply for a job? It's a real dick move, since everybody knows Evie really wants to be a lawyer like her Mum. T: I am aware of Evie's career interests. I'm positive she is in a position to pursue them after undergoing treatment for a little longer. "F": Sure (sarcasm). It's not like she doesn't have the grades or anything. She was probably the most brilliant student Gryffindor ever saw. But those assholes used to think she was cuckoo and avoided her all the time. Only those elitist kids ever talked to her, only because they knew their parents would look down on them for doing that. They all thought Evie was just suffering for Jemima or something. Not like she even remember Jemima. Even though she killed her. T: Why do you say that? "F": Oh come on, you know the story. Evie running, Jemima following, bang, crash, cue funeral march. T: *winces* I see. But, Fiona, that was an accident. Neither Evie, nor Jemima had anything to do with it. It was all about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. "F": Isn't everything at the wrong place and the wrong time, then? Hey, if she wants to shove aside her guilt, then it's not my problem. I'm just saying, fact is fact. T: *folds arms* Fiona, what do you think of Evie? "F": You've asked me this before. T: Humor me. "F": Only if it gets me out of here faster. T: It's the last question, I promise. "F": *sighs* For one, she's a real cute person once you get to know her. You know, if I had her name, I'd be knee deep in irritation. Everytime she introduces herself, people ask her what Evie's short for. She has to explain that her first name is actually Evie - which is a real riot, if you look at how grand and pretentious her sibling's names are...Alastair, Jemima, Gwendolyn..and then there's just Evie. She is her name, you know? Cute, short, innocent sounding...incomplete and abrupt. Everyone's always thought she's a bit of an airhead. Her parents are super embarrassed by it all the time, even though I know they love her in their really weird, disturbing way. Her siblings are neither here nor there. They love her too, and accept her as she is but even they secretly think she could do so much better than sit at home. But I know how smart she is, and I'll bet even her old Professors would tell you the same. Everyone just thinks she's dumb because she forgets the important stuff and gets good at the unimportant one. Like…I remember this one time, she had this huge essay to submit for History of Magic, and she did so much research. Definitely an O grade paper. But she completely blanked about what the teacher had said about the due date, and handed it in three days late. She got an E for late submission. Then the time when she tried baking, when her parents were out (because why let anyone in the kitchen with the house elves, right?). She had the best batter ready, and she put it in the oven and everything. She just forgot to set the timer and went about with her stuff. Burnt to a crisp by the end of it, plus a sound scolding from her parents for even trying to bake. Sadly enough, she didn't even remember the fact that she had to time the whole thing. That's the thing with Evie, you know. On the outside, she just seems like an absent minded, irresponsible girl. But her brain is just wired that way - you'd know that. The forgetting, the blackouts, the amnesia, the lost time. It's not just lack of responsibility. Something's up with her and it's hindering her from being who she really is. That stops other people from figuring it out too, you know? Some don't even try and some don't even get a chance to find out before she's forbidden from saying anything about her condition. It would ruin the reputation of the family. Even in school, she always kept to herself or to her siblings. She'd read a lot, alone, or - T: *takes note* "Fiona" seems very aware of Evie's problems and persona, but doesn't realize they are the same person. Thinks of herself as Evie's friend. Thinks Evie simply forgets her due to her amnesia. "F": - or she'd listen to music. If I wasn't there to sneakily drag her out once in a while, Merlin knows she'd have gone even crazier being all on her own. What did you just write? Never mind. Anyway…right, Evie. She's a real sweetheart when she's being normal, though. She's an amazing friend if you let her be one. Have you seen her with Harrison's sister, Helena? Those two could be the best of friends and nobody would know that something was wrong with one of them. But Evie doesn't have that many friends so she doesn't realize it. It's a real shame. She's a real passionate girl. It's like…the universe designed this girl to be a brilliant minded woman. She's smart, she's clever. She's passionate. She has a strong will. She's loyal, she's a good listener. She's not rude. She doesn't indulge in anything bad. But then the universe stares at it's design and then rips holes into fundamental joints holding it all up. All Evie's left is with tatters. It's really not fair. And those tatters make a mess of everything. She can get snappy because she doesn't sleep sometimes. She can get confusingly vague and a little scary when she doesn't remember stuff (if I had a galleon for the number of times people have been offended because she doesn't remember something they said or did). Sometimes she also gets weirdly anxious and paranoid, and then she just starts freaking out and screaming. Stuff like that scares people. They don't know she just needs to be not left alone, and given the right potions to help her. They don't know her. They just judge her. You said she'll do what she wants once she's free of this shit, right? You said she should be able to do what she wants once her Mum and Dad see how brilliantly she copes. I'm telling you…if that ever happens, she'll be a genius name to live up to. And if it doesn't, she might not have existed in the first place. *gets up and walks out before the therapist allows her to leave* Diary Entry #600: Am I Evie? - Fiona Kennitt The diary is pushed to the bottom of the cabinet, underneath the false flooring, at exactly three in the morning. The board doesn't make a single noise - all the furnishings in the Flint household are well maintained - as it slides back into place. She takes out a cigarette to light, puffing it quietly, blowing the dark smoke in the direction of the cracked window, so that the smoke leaves no smell in her lavender scented bedroom. When she's done, she closes her eyes and goes to bed. In the morning, she's left with nothing but confusion as to why her quill pot is left open and where on earth that horrid smell came from, overnight. BROOKE NINETEEN (IST) GMT+5:30 |
