"I'm here!" Soraya announces as she entered the room with poise, demanding everyone's attention. And you'll give it to her. OVERALL STATS NAME: Soraya Grace Selwyn AGE: 17 BIRTHDAY: October 10th, 2007 ZODIAC: Libra YEAR (HOGWARTS): 7th HOUSE: Slytherin HEIGHT: 5'5" WEIGHT: 117 pounds EYE COLOR: Brown HAIR COLOR: Brown MARITAL STATUS: Single NAME ETYMOLOGY • Soraya is of Persian origin and means "princess". • Grace is of Latin origin and means "favor, blessing". • Selwyn is an Anglo-Saxon name, roughly translatting to "friend in the house/castle". FAMILY STATS FATHER: Channing Selwyn MOTHER: Nerys Selwyn (née Orpington) SIBLINGS: Cyrus Selwyn (24), Conan Selwyn (20), Serena Selwyn (14) UNCLE: Caliban Yaxley AUNT: Eilona Yaxley (née Selwyn) COUSINS: Deucalion Yaxley (22), Amara Yaxley (21), Nikolaos Yaxley (18), Astraia Yaxley (16) OTHERS: The rest of the purebloods to varying degrees October 10th, 2012 Dear Diary, Today is my birthday. I am five. That is all of the fingers on one of my hands. I tried to teach Serena how to count to five because it's the most important number, but Mummy says she's too little to know how. Conan said we should teach her to high-five, but she didn't get that either. She just giggled and clapped her hands. We're having a party later with the family. I wanted a huge party - one with lots of people and food and pretty dresses - but Mummy said we could do that when I was older. When I asked how old, she didn't give me an answer. I want a big party! I knew better than to throw a tantrum like Serena still does, but I really wanted to. It's not fair. Mummy and Daddy always get to go to big parties. They seem like so much fun! I guess I'll have to be patient and wait until I can finally go big parties. Oh, Cyrus wrote me. He's away at school, remember? He wished me a happy birthday and sent me some sweets. I know he got the money to buy them from Mummy and Daddy, but I'll pretend for his sake that he earned it himself. - Soraya December 25th, 2012 Dear Diary, It's Christmas today. Serena sneaked into my room and woke me up, insisting that we go downstairs to open presents. She doesn't understand patience. Mummy says it's because she's two. I think it's because she's a brat. When I told her that we had to wait to open presents, she went out into the corridor and screamed at the top of her lungs until everyone in the manor woke up. Then she got her way and we opened presents. Of course, we all got everything we wanted like every year. You remember what I wanted, didn't you? My Christmas List is just a few pages back, so I shouldn't have to remind you what I wanted and got. We had our traditional family breakfast after opening presents - muffins, the freshest berries, waffles, eggs, toast, bacon, sausage (I didn't eat any of that) and orange juice. Mummy, Daddy and Cyrus got some bubbly added into their juice. It's got a fancy name, but I'm so fatigued from this morning's episode that I can't remember it. You'll have to forgive my memory lapse. Later on, we're going over to our cousin's manor like every year. I'm so excited! I love going over there. It's so much fun! Mummy said I can wear a little bit of make-up this year, too. I should probably get going. -Soraya December 25th, 2012 Dear Diary, I know it's late and I should be sleeping, but I have to tell you - the name of that bubbly juice drink is mimosa! I can't wait to try it when I'm older. Goodnight! - Soraya December 31st, 2012 Dear Diary, It's the last night of this year. In a few hours, it will be 2013. Mummy and Daddy are hosting a big party. All eight of us cousins aren't allowed to go downstairs. Serena and Astraia are already asleep. Cyrus is in charge of all of us and he says that I have to go to bed soon, too. I don't mind. I'm sleepy. But it's only fair if Nikolas goes to bed when I do - he's only a year older than me! The guests are making lots of noise downstairs. I wish I could see what's going on.... - Soraya January 1st, 2013 Dear Diary, Curiosity got the best of me last night. I went downstairs. Mummy found out. I'm not allowed to see my friends for a week. Oh, the woes of being five! -Soraya October 10th, 2013 Dear Diary, It's my birthday. I am six. I've been writing in you for a year now. A lot has happened in a year, hasn't it? I didn't have a big party this year, either. I told Mummy, again, this year that it wasn't fair, but she more or less ignored me. I'm not going to stop until I get what I want. That seems to be Serena's method and it's working for her so far. Either that or Mummy favors her-- October 10th, 2013 Oops! I ran out of room to write anything. Luckily, Cyrus wised-up and noticed how much I write in you (or, the old you) and bought me a new diary for my birthday. Anyway, what was I saying? Oh, right, Serena. I think Mummy might favor her, but that is unacceptable. I'm the only princess around here. -Soraya It was that birthday, when she turned six, that Soraya became the women she is today. She was the first girl born to Channing and Nerys Selwyn and planned on making that clear. The first anything was always more important, she learned from a young age; especially in the pureblood society. Cyrus would be the most important child out of all four of them, but Soraya was determined to make it certain that just because she was a girl and the third born, didn't mean she could be cast aside for a tantrum-throwing three-year-old. Oh, no, she was going to keep her first place position no matter what she had to do. But not to be fooled. Soraya loves her little sister. In fact, when she learned that neither of her parents played favorites, she decided that she would be a role model for Serena. From an early age, it was clear that Soraya was bright and tough. She was only a few days old when she developed a bad cough and was eventually diagnosed with pertussis (more commonly known as whooping cough.) She was hospitalized right away and treated for it. She pulled through quickly, however, much to the dismay of the Healers and her parents. She displayed her first signs of magic by twelve months - much earlier than the rest of her siblings. Soraya also caught on quickly to games or patterns. Her parents had a difficult time keeping her occupied because she would grow bored of swatting at hanging toys, yet she figured out "puzzles" too quickly to allow her parents any sort of rest. When Soraya began to show the desire to learn how to read and write, her parents instantly hired her a tutor. Finally, something that would challenge her! She was about four when her homeschooling began and she was content to learn. By five, she was keeping a diary. Soraya was always mature for her age. She was in a rush to grow up, under the misconception that being an adult was better than being a child. She witnessed her mother and father having parties and always getting to do fun things whilst she was forced to sit out "big parties" or other events that she thought were fun. She acted like a mini-adult her entire childhood and therefore never really experienced being a child. It wasn't her parents doing; Channing and Nerys are probably two of the most laid-back purebloods one could ever encounter. They're proper, but laid-back. They tried to encourage their eldest daughter to be a child, but Soraya had ideas of her own. October 11th, 2015 Dear Diary, I turned eight years old yesterday! My birthday party wasn't anything too special. Conan wasn't around for it this year. He's at his first year of Hogwarts - lucky him! I can't wait to go. But that's not why I'm writing today. Yesterday, Mum agreed to let me have cotillion lessons! I'm so excited! I've been begging her for months now after reading about them in Witch Weekly. She doesn't seem to happy about it. I don't know why. It seems like such fun! I can't wait to start. We have a meeting next week with a lady who gives the lessons. - Soraya At eight years old, Soraya began the long process of becoming a future debutante. It was a tradition dating back centuries, but more or less was unpopular in the current culture. Debutante balls, or "coming out" parties, were still around, but they weren't nearly as popular as they had once been. For this reason, Nerys did not want her daughter to participate in the event. But Soraya was determined and didn't stop bothering her mother until she got her way. So, once a week until she went to Hogwarts, Soraya had cotillion lessons. She enjoyed every minute of it, whilst some of the other children hated it as they were forced to attend the lessons. Serena would eventually join her sister at the lessons, when she turned eight. By the time she was eleven, Soraya's eldest brother, Cyrus, had already graduated from Hogwarts. Conan was in his fourth year, however; and like any sibling, didn't want his younger sister around him. Soraya didn't mind. She didn't need her brother's guidance or help or anything. She was perfectly capable of handling everything on her own. And she did, with great ease. She asserted herself to Queen B within the group of girls in her dorm. She set the trends and they were to follow suit. Soraya was never mean - unless she absolutely had to be. She was actually quite a sweet girl, so long as she was getting her way. The actual schoolwork was a breeze for the eleven-year-old. She often complained that she wasn't being challenged enough, s during holidays, Cyrus and Conan would teach her more advanced spells. Serena often watched on, begging her older siblings to let her try. They never obliged, though, for fear of something going seriously wrong or getting into trouble. The years passed by slowly, with the same pattern. Soraya went to Hogwarts to September, celebrated her birthday there (which was strange for the first few years), went home for Christmas holidays, went back to school, went home for Easter holidays, went back to school and then eventually went home for the eight-week summer holiday. During the summer, she resumed her cotillion lessons along with Serena. Soraya insists on being a good role model for her sister and therefore makes sure that she does the things her older sister does. Soraya encourages her younger sister to be a good student as well. February 15th, 2020 Dear Diary, I broke up with my boyfriend. We had only been going out for a few days when he tried to kiss me. It was yesterday, on Valentine's Day. I'm not opposed to kissing, but we really hardly knew each other. I didn't want to kiss him just because it was a romantic holiday. When he didn't get the clue that I didn't want to kiss him, I kneed him between the legs. He had to go see Madame Pomfrey. I have detention tonight. I am absolutely mortified by that. -Soraya When it comes to romance, Soraya isn't exactly sure what she wants. As stated above in her diary entry, she had a boyfriend for a few short days when she was 13. It didn't well. After that, she swore off dating until she believed she was ready. During the summer of her fifth year, she met a boy at cotillion lessons. But it was his older brother that she was interested in. He was out of Hogwarts, but attractive and very charming. They spoke and flirted and even went out for coffee. Eventually, they began to date. They didn't break up when Soraya had to go back to Hogwarts for her 5th year. Instead, they wrote each other everyday and he visited her during Hogsmeade weekends. They dated for two years before breaking up. It happened during the past Easter holidays. They had just gone out for ice cream and were walking around, holding hands, when he announced that he had to go away for work. He works with magical creatures and was being sent to another country to help build a rehabilitation center. Soraya didn't understand why they had to break up, but she accepted his explanation. On the outside, she was poised and understanding. On the inside, she was dying. She really did love him and though they hadn't had sex yet, she knew that when they did, it would be alright. When Soraya returned home that night from their last date, she holed herself up in her room and cried. She refused to speak to anyone about what had had happened She went back to school, utterly depressed, but threw herself into her schoolwork. Currently, Soraya does not have any romantic interests. She is, however, looking forward to her "coming out" party that will happen this summer. It's an old fashioned idea, but she had spent the last several years in cotillion lessons - she might as well attend this year's debutante ball. She's not exactly looking for a husband, but she knows that eventually she wants to get married - she might as well survey her options now. As for school, Soraya is looking forward to her 7th and final year at Hogwarts. HANNA 24 GMT -5 |
