NEIL FRANKLIN PEREIRA
NICKNAMES: Neil AGE/DOB: 19/ 29th March 2005 HOUSE: Ex-Slytherin DISLIKES: Being told that much is expected of him, comparisons between him and Jade, green vegetables, muggle classical music, Transfiguration class, waking up early, gossip. LIKES: muggle 'rock' music, chocolate, sarcastic/dry humour, flying, Potions class, smoking, drinking, spending the night out basically, weed (he will not admit to this). BAD HABITS: Procrastinates, has a bit of an ego even though he denies it, resorts to smoking and drinking when he is stressed, backtalks a lot. GOOD HABITS: Determined to get what he wants, doesn't mind helping a lending hand once in a while, socializes well, doesn't make himself to be superior to others unless he genuinely hates them and has a history with them. WEAKNESSES: stressful situations, when he is under pressure from his parents, his sister, adelaide, STRENGTHS: Passionate, determined, protective and trustworthy. PERSONALITY: Neil had always been a bit of a star, even though he doesn't want to be. Even though he is laid back in nature, he is extremely talented and smart, and he aced almost all his classes at school. He was also the more favored child, despite Jade being a better daughter to his parents than he was a son. He is protective of those he loves, especially his sister, and would go to any length to help them when they are in need. He is a very determined boy, working towards what he wants when he's sure it's what he wants. He also is a good caregiver, earning well for himself, his sister and keeping his girlfriend happy and unburdened. He's also a lot less reckless compared to the way he was in school. Back then, it was all about girls and parties. But after a life changing incident in his sixth year vacations, a steady relationship and a new job, he's become a lot more serious about life and is more settled down. Of course, he still loves to have fun and goes out a lot - but it's no longer just about the high or the sex. It's about enjoying and unwinding. Sometimes he can't handle the stress of it all, though. When he feels too pressured, he can become annoyed and irritated, and extremely short tempered. He'll say things he doesn't mean, and use people's weaknesses against them. It's probably the Slytherin in him that does that. He also resorts to smoking and drinking to run away from his own problems, even if he helps others with theirs. He doesn't smoke weed much anymore, but sometimes it can get the better of him and he prefers the dazed, uncaring of it compared to dealing with his problems. SECRETS: 1. He dislikes his parents. As in, he loves them but only because they brought him and Jade into the world. 2. When he was in second year, he purposely failed two classes so that his parents would tone it down a notch. 3. He snuck out of his home for a whole night once, just to go and party at a muggle bar. 4. He wishes Brianna hadn't screwed him over and left without an explanation, and they'd had some closure. 5. He still has a soft spot for her, and it's buried deep inside in a place he doesn't visit anymore. WORST MEMORY: When he found out that he had gotten Brianna pregnant. As much as he hates that it's his worst memory, it is. The pure terror he felt, and how he didn't know what to do. He was just a kid. And he was in no position to take care of one. And now the memory not only reminds him of how it led him to losing Brianna, but also of the fact that he, at some point, no matter how tiny, had a child who will never come into this world. BEST MEMORY: Going to Hogwarts, where he would finally be able to use magic. FATHER: Leslie Pereira, 39. He is a Muggle doctor and expects a lot from his children. He expected Neil to graduate Hogwarts, and the magical world, and join a Muggle Med School. MOTHER: Jude Pereira, 38. A muggleborn witch who is extremely proud of her son and is constantly trying to contact him. SIBLINGS: Jade Pereira, 22. Although he is often compared to her and expected to "set an example" despite being younger, he loves her just the way she is. They are pretty close to each other and he is always there for her. HISTORY: Neil was born into an extremely orthodox Christian family, and from a young age always looked up to his sister. Ever since he was a baby, his sister was his best friend. Having grown up as a curious and mischievous child, it was never past him to ask her or his mother why they didn't do magic like the people on the telly did sometimes or like he'd seen Jade do sometimes. Of course, his questions were always met with rolling eyes. His entire childhood was filled with his parents pushing him into starting muggle education early and doing well in subjects like math and science. It was as if they never acknowledged what he was capable of possessing, or what he saw. He never wanted to be a doctor like his father, a man which he feared although he never had much reason to. Instead, his curious questions turned into blatant demands for explanations. After much squabbling and threats of punishment, his mother gave in and told him about Hogwarts and where she'd studied. He was both fascinated and oddly betrayed. He didn't understand why this was something she'd ever have to hide from him, especially since she too was a witch. She explained to him that she didn't want to delve into the topic and that he should focus on his work, instead. However, he noticed the fact that when he started showing signs of magic and his sister started school, he was favored more. He didn't understand what exactly caused this to happen, but he went with it reluctantly. Already, he was starting to show signs of resentment for trying to curb his magic. It shocked him to learn that the girl he looked up to was now placed on a pedestal lower than him. He knew what a wonderful girl she was and he didn't know why she was being judged against a completely irrelevant parameter. It even angered him and made him more reclusive from his parents who fawned over him. The more they tried to get closer to him, the more he pulled away. The day he finally left for Hogwarts was the absolute best for him. He felt like he was a part of a prison break when he was allowed to go to Hogwarts and become part of the world he'd always suppressed inside of him. He quickly made friends and found a new family among them, although he was in constant touch with Jade. It did come to him as a little bit of a shock that he was put in Slytherin, since he'd assumed he'd be in Jade's house. He'd heard old rumors about it, but didn't pay much heed to them after the boy he sat down next to immediately struck up a conversation about shepherd's pie. Within a few hours, he was already used to being part of the house of the snake. Over the years as his grades rocketed up along with his ego, his capacity to understand it all spiraled downwards. He knew, on some level, that he was extremely happy with his social life, and his academic records. But the constant nagging from his parents left him confused. His teachers questioned his misbehavior, despite him being such a smart boy. His mother was proud of him and knew he'd do well, while his dad told him to continue excelling and then leave it all for a higher Muggle institution after graduation. More than that, he himself had no clue what to do with his good IQ and undiscovered talents. He didn't have a single idea on what he was going to do in life. Unable to cope with his parent's expectations, frequent squabbles with a few schoolmates, his sister's rejection to her dream jobs and his exams, he started smoking and drinking at the tender age of 14. He quickly got hooked and to this day, uses them as stress busters. But the sunshine came anyway, when he passed all his OWL subjects and Jade got a job. He still continued to rebel against his parents, but with his own brand of stress busters keeping him calm, he finally started putting together the counseling and the knowledge he'd gained by the time he was sixteen. He decided he wanted to pursue a career in the Ministry of Magic; something which allowed him to be a conduit between the Muggle and Wizard world to try and bridge the gap for those muggleborns who have to deal with difference in opinions from their dual lives. It was also around this newly found confident phase in his life, that he met Brianna McLaggen. A beautiful witch of the same age as him, he'd run into her in different parties. He had heard rumors of her but he hates gossip, so he never listened to them much. He never fully took interest in her until the time he drunkenly Apparated and found himself in France. In France, and incidentally on the same beach as Brianna. Given his lack of shame and sober state, and the mutual flirtation, the two ended up sleeping together. But even he knew this was different from any of the other girls he'd messed around with. He actually liked her - he'd found her intriguing before he'd even officially talked to her. And the next morning, when he woke up, he didn't want to just say goodbye and walk out. He wanted to spend the day with her and go on dates. He liked her, for real. Over the summer, his feelings for her grew, especially over the distance. He sometimes wondered if his mind was making up his feelings because of the distance. But when he did manage to talk to her (she'd been avoiding him), he found himself falling for her harder than he'd ever thought possible. When he returned for his seventh year, he was ready to ask her where they stood and what they should do further. That is, until, she broke the news to him which tipped his life upside down and shook its foundations. She'd become pregnant after their little encounter in France, and now he was going to become a father. Neil honestly thought that if the Hogwarts Express hit him, then the blow to his chest would've been softer. It took him a while to comprehend, but he was quick to offer his support. He would help her, should she ask for it. Over the next weeks, as much as he tried reaching out to her, the more she withdrew. He knew she was processing her own shock, her own bodily changes, mental changes, as well as the stigma she might face. And then, just when he thought things couldn't get worse, she told him she was going to abort the baby and then she was gone. Just...gone. He woke up one day and she'd pulled out of Hogwarts. He tried contacting her, sending owls after owls, and using the Floo. None of it worked. Eventually, he assumed she didn't want him in her life. He was devastated. Not only had he lost the first girl he ever loved, but knowing how it had ended...it broke him. He told himself he had to move on and did what he did best. He partied harder than he ever had; he drank more than he could afford; he was high a lot; and he was sleeping around like the world was about to end. He did his best to become a mechanical machine, and put his heart in a locked box. The more he denied his love for Brianna, the angrier he got at her for leaving him and for taking his baby away from him. Of course, it was a huge responsibility lifted off his shoulders, but that didn't mean he didn't want a part in her life. It was around this time that he also started picking fights with people, namely a girl who'd transferred to Hogwarts. Her name was Adelaide, and boy did he hate her guts. She called him out on his crap, and infuriated him like nobody ever had. Fighting between classes, in corridors, around the Lake...it was becoming routine. Eventually, he started channeling all his frustration into their arguments. The more venom he spewed, the less heavy his chest felt. Eventually, their mini battles turned into bantering. Bantering turned into sexual tension. Sexual tension turned into confused, frustrated feelings, which morphed into a drunken one night stand at the Hog's Head. They avoided each other for a while after that, until they confronted each other and asked each other out. And boy, did it change him. No longer was he the boy who was broken from the dual loss and shock of first love and unplanned fatherhood. No. Now he was an angry young man, who was being transformed into something lighter and happier. Unfortunately, the majority of his seventh year was spent in getting over Brianna, which led to a landslide disaster in his grades. Given that he just passed his NEWTs, after a sparkling academic record, and got passable recommendations after the attitude he pulled..he didn't get the Ministry Job he'd always hoped for. But he knew that this was not the worst thing that had happened to him. Getting a job as an intern at the Daily Prophet, and working night shifts at a bar, he finally collected money with his sister to move out of their parents' house and live on their own. Eventually, he finished the mandatory internship months, and got a good recommendation to become a satire/humor columnist for a magazine. The pay was good enough for him to leave the bartending, and now, a year later, he only focuses on the writing job, his sister and his relationship with Adelaide. BROOKE NINETEEN (IST) GMT+5:30 |
