He loves his hair and the attention he gets and how it has become his trademark. He's a very fun-loving ex-Hufflepuff whose life revolves around music, the band members of the Fifth Horseman, his family and friends, his fans, his cat, and his hair. His mouth is usually uncensored – and uncensorable – but he's an all-around nice guy who just happens to be more into guys than girls. It's not that he swears like a sailor; he just tends to say exactly what he's thinking because he doesn't see why he should censor anything out. This is also how he expects to be treated by everyone else. He'd rather be hated for who he was than loved for who he was not. He tends to be friends with everyone, and he loves his fans. However, he has been teased about his sexual orientation and the fact that his face is very feminine, which has caused many insults from those who weren't convinced of their own sexuality. He takes it all in his stride and if there's anything he's hiding from the world, it's how much those insults hurt him. He believes in a free country and a free world, in being free to love whoever you wanted. AMORTENTIA: Hair spray, newly polished wood, hot chocolate MIRROR OF ERISED: To become famous and successful, and probably with a perfect other-half VERITASERUM: 1.) He never tells anyone how often he gets teased or insulted about his sexuality and his face 2.) He never tells anyone how much they hurt 3.) He was very seriously tempted to kiss a boy one year younger than him in his fifth year – he had to avoid the boy just to stop himself from pouncing on him BOGGART: To die alone DEMENTOR: His father turning his back on him and slamming the door to his study when Leon came out about his sexuality PATRONUS: The green light from the recording company, his first ever proper concert in Hogwarts where everyone partied out FATHER: James Luke Ryder, 53, Muggleborn, works in a Muggle Catholic private school MOTHER: Catherine Julia Ryder, 50, halfblood, works in a Muggle library HISTORY: Benji Leon was born to two hardworking parents who had little time for him, but what time they could spend with him, they spent wisely and made sure it was filled with fun. From a very young age, Leon showed an aptitude for learning guitar. His mother always sang to him before bed and greeted him with a song when he woke up, and usually hummed as she worked around the house. This taught Leon that everything could be done with a musical note. He was ten when he first started singing for his family. Because he spent more time with his mother than his father, he followed her ways and would set the table, clean around the house, water the flowers, and other domestic chores. He also amused himself with her jewelry and make-up, and he was delighted when they worked wonderfully with his soft face. His particular favourite was the eyeliner – the older he grew, the more he'd put on. Whenever his father was home, he'd always try to interest Leon in sports or watching TV, but Leon was always more into cleaning the house or gardening or trying on different clothes, both from his own wardrobe and his parents' wardrobe. Once, when his father came home early from work and found Leon with raccoon eyes, he'd forbade him from touching the make-up ever again. He explained, with a bit of difficulty, why to his son, and try as he might to understand it, Leon always wondered why boys couldn't have it, too. However, with the make-up off-limits, he then spent most of his time styling his hair. He realized it looked pretty damn cool when it was so different from everyone else, and he liked the looks he'd get from those he passed by whenever his parents took him out shopping. When he was eleven, he received his Hogwarts acceptance letter and headed to the magic school, excited at the prospect of finally being out of his father's watchful eye. However, he was teased often because he was sorted into Hufflepuff, and because many often mistook him for a girl due to his face and long hair. Over the years, whenever boys thought he was a girl and would try to make a move, then realise that he was in fact a boy, they'd bully him to cover up their shame and to stop their friends from making fun of them. In fourth year, he realized with something akin to horror that he actually flirted back with those boys who thought he was a girl and flirted with him. Some of them realized this, and began to call him names. He became withdrawn, and his own parents began to notice he had changed. He had become a little snarky and tended to snap at boys who mistook his gender. It was in his fifth year, after he'd told off yet another boy for flirting with him, that the boy replied that he knew, and he genuinely liked him for him, despite his gender. The boy made him realise that he wasn't the only one who felt that way, and it was actually acceptable, and he wasn't the one who had a problem with the world, it was those who'd taunted him about his sexuality. The boy taught him to accept himself, and Leon gradually became happier with himself. The boy became his first boyfriend. In the summer before his sixth year, he came out about his sexuality to his parents. His mother seemed a little shock, but she said that she'd always thought that might happen one day. She recounted fond memories she had of him when she was little and she'd caught him trying on her heels and sniffing at her perfume and giving her the frank fashion advice of a five-year-old. His father, on the other hand, had wordlessly stood up and went to his study, slamming the door as he went. The sound was like a slap to his face, and Leon would never forget that moment. It took James all of twenty hours to drink and sleep it all off, before coming to his son's bedroom and telling him that he'd been afraid of that, but he'd always known there would be a great chance that Leon would turn out gay. He said that it'd probably take him some time to get used to it and the idea of Leon bringing boys and not girls home, but he accepted the fact and he was proud of his son for having the courage to come out about it. Leon began to experiment with make-up again, and continued working lovingly on his hair and wardrobe. In sixth year, Leon 'came out of the closet' in public and continued dating the boy he'd met from his fifth year. They broke it off amicably when the boy chose to concentrate more on his studies and Quidditch, and Leon was surprised when he realized he had feelings for a girl with long, curly brown hair and wide blue eyes. Not quite knowing how to deal with girls – his ex-boyfriend had asked him out pretty straightforwardly – he just went ahead and asked for a date. The girl had blushed prettily, but one of her friends was a bitch and told Leon no (as if he'd asked her) because he was gay. The girl had looked between her bitchy friend and Leon, before asking the latter if it was true. Leon had shrugged and said yes, but he must be getting some mixed signals because he found the girl incredibly pretty and he actually liked her. The girl had taken one deep look into his eyes, before saying yes to his proposition of a date. She was the first date he brought home. His parents were almost shell-shocked when they realized he'd brought home a girl, and later, after she'd gone home, his father pulled him aside and angrily demanded what Leon was playing at. Leon had replied calmly that he realized he actually liked both boys and girls, and that he wasn't playing at anything. James had paced around the living room, not knowing how to take the new information, before throwing his hands up in the air exasperatedly and saying, “Well, next time, tell us before you bring someone home.” He proceeded to stalk out of the living room and into his study, but to Leon's surprised relief, he didn't slam the door. In seventh year, he overheard a group of friends talking about a jamming session, and remembering his fondness for music and musical instruments, Leon had asked to join. Surprised and a little taken-aback by Leon's appearance, the group of friends had shrugged and allowed him to their session. His personality and singing made him well and easily likeable, and he soon became absorbed into their group. They continued to be close and have jamming sessions after their graduation. However, his relationship with his girlfriend had to be severed after her parents met him and disapproved of his hair and clothes. It was when he brought the group to his house and they'd played a couple of songs that his mother said they played really good together – so good, in fact, that they could be in a band and she'd gladly buy one of their albums. No, it wasn't her taste in music, but she could be easily swayed. Leon had chased her out of the kitchen lovingly, while she smiled that teasing smile at the group, but after that, the group of friends couldn't get the idea out of their heads. They had a singer, a lead and a rhythm guitarist, and they had a drummer – all they needed was a bassist. They put out an ad in the Daily Prophet, and the only decent applicant was a bitch of a girl who happened to have more words than musical notes. Still, she was the best, and she had suggestions on how they could improve, and they really needed a complete band, so they swallowed their insults and her attitude and adopted her into the band. They didn't go very far for the first two years, mostly covers of other bands and playing in small pubs. They did a couple of gigs at the Leaky Cauldron, but their audience were varied and they could tell their own music was hardly serious or of any real quality. It wasn't until the lead guitarist fell in love with someone he saw in the crowd and never saw again, and then wrote a song about it, that the band really began to pick up its muse. Soon, all the members – save the snarky bitch – began to contribute songs – she, of course, had plenty to say about a lot of the lyrics, but Leon had to admit that what she said made sense. Soon, they could do a whole gig with their own songs and a popular cover or two of another band, and they were noticed and picked up by a record label. They finished their first album a year and a half ago, and are gearing up for a tour with the Weird Sisters. They have done concerts at Hogwarts, most notably during the Halloween Ball last year.
