CARA ROSEMARY FINNIGAN
Cara was born in 2004, the third of the Finnigan children born to Seamus and Lavender. Her middle name is her maternal grandmother, Rosemary Brown's. Ever since she can remember, she’s played the tagalong to most of Tommy and Brigid’s adventures – while those two were clearly the ringleaders of every bit of trouble the three of them got into, poor Cara could usually be found in the middle. Because of this Cara’s always been the family’s mediator and a bit mature for her age. Having gotten used to being the third wheel of sorts, Cara was the most excited when they found out they would be having another sibling – in fact, Cara displayed her first signs of magic at this age, turning herself bright yellow when she found out that she would have someone to play with who was “even smaller than me!” Even after Moira’s birth, Cara continued to be fascinated by the baby, and was always underfoot, trying to help her mother look after Moira. As Moira grew older, Cara insisted on including her in the games Tommy and Brigid played, and if the older two paired off, Cara was only too happy to entertain her little sister by picking her flowers or offering her toys. Meanwhile, as they grew older, Siobhan and Patrick were born and Cara took over the job of entertaining her younger siblings. At her primary school, Cara was relatively quiet, and spent more time reading and drawing than playing with the other kids. She decided that playing with the younger kids was her own passion, and for a long time told her family that she wanted to become a teacher at a Wizarding primary. When Tommy went off to school for his first year, Cara cried for days after he left, since she had never spent so much time without her older brother before. Even her newest little sister Meghan couldn’t drag her out of her tears. During Tommy’s first year, she grew a lot closer to Brigid and the two sisters grew much friendlier during this time. When she found out that Brigid would be leaving in a year as well, though, Cara became frightened of Hogwarts and leaving her family, and began secretly to plan ways of getting out of going there. However after Brigid left, leaving Cara the oldest sibling in the house, Cara found that she enjoyed ‘being the biggest’ and finally decided Hogwarts wasn’t so bad. When her letter came, Cara went off to buy supplies in Diagon Alley with just a tinge of fear. Once she reached Hogwarts, Cara was sorted into Gryffindor, to her surprise – considering her interests, and how different she felt she was from Tommy and Brigid, she’d expected to go into either Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. Though the girls in her dorm were nice, Cara was quieter than any of them, and made most of her friends in Ravenclaw. She ended up being closer to her siblings than her friends, at any rate. She did very well in all her classes, to the surprise of many of her Professors, who’d expected her to be a student more like Tommy and Brigid. While she did well in Charms and was a respectable Herbology and Transfiguration student, Cara’s real talent was in Potions, which she became very fascinated with, to the point where she spent a good deal of time in the Potions dungeons after classes, doing extra credit projects. Suddenly Potion-making seemed so interesting that Cara began to think about that as a career, instead of her previous ambition of teaching. It was also during this year that she found Pottymouth, the toad, wandering around the grounds. In the next year-and-half or so, during her Fourth Year, Cara discovered that she liked girls that way – initially, she didn’t realize that what she felt was a romantic interest, until after she caught herself blushing and stuttering around one of the Ravenclaw girls she’d known for a while. She never acted on these feelings during her school years, but was very aware that she had them. Initially, she felt confused about her feeling, but felt too embarrassed to ask anyone. She didn’t know how to raise the topic, even with her family, and is still yet to openly come out to them. One place that gave her no trouble at all, though, was her school work and Cara excelled in her OWLs – receiving an O in Potions, and Os and Es in seven other subjects. It was during the hectic time of OWL preparations that Cara picked up another hobby – painting. While she’d never formally taken lessons, Cara found that art became a pursuit that allowed her as much creativity as her Potions interest did. In Seventh Year, Cara did really well in all her NEWTs as well, and after her Potions professor’s recommendation, she applied for the Apprentice position at Slug & Jigger’s. Once she landed the position – which she was thrilled to receive – she moved into a nearby flat and took to her job with gusto. On days off, she likes to paint, and her flat is a haphazard mix of half-finished canvases, painting supplies, and potions materials. The only thing she minds is not being near her siblings, but she makes sure to visit home as much as possible. Cara continues to try and look after her younger siblings as much as possible, though it has become difficult to do so the older she gets. She still, however, writes long letters home to her parents and all of her siblings. During the years she has been living independently, Cara has slowly become more comfortable with her sexuality, and even worked up the courage to go on a few dates with women she’s met at the Apothecary or in pubs. Her time living alone has also given Cara a lot of the self-confidence she didn’t have during her school years – while she is still quiet, it comes across more as thoughtfulness than shyness, now, and she is more willing to take risks and explore new things than she was before. She is yet to start a long-term relationship with anyone, but doesn’t really feel a lot of pressure to begin one or rush herself before she meets someone she is truly interested in. And, of course, like most sane people, Cara prefers to make love, not horcruxes. VERITY 21 ZONE |
