Lorcan wiped down the table, paused to check out his handiwork, and then wiped it down again. Working at the Tamarisk Tree was familiar, and interacting with the patrons was something he found surprisingly enjoyable, but near the end of his shift, things definitely did get more dull - enough that he was here, adjusting his table-wiping technique.
He took another peek around the room. It was right at that weird hour between lunch and dinner when hardly anyone was in the cafe. There were hardly two or three people around, and he nodded vaguely at them and smiled as he wandered back towards the counter.
Maybe afterwards he'd go out and look for some shops he hadn't visited yet. Most of the ones nearby were already familiar; Lorcan didn't really look like it, but he had the Scamander exploring bug as much as anyone else in his family. But who knew, maybe something exciting would happen before the end of his shift and take his mind off his boredom.

Devyn had grown accustomed to wandering around Diagon Alley on her own over the years - her parents typically used to send her and Danni there together whenever they claimed they needed to go shopping, and the sisters would make the unanimous decision to split up as soon as they stepped out the door so they wouldn't have to deal with one another all day. At least, that's what Devyn believed, as she would blatantly ignore Danni's protests that they should explore the shops together, and eventually Danni had just stopped asking because she knew what the answer would be. Currently, Devyn didn't know what her sister was up to, as she hadn't seen her around the house much over the past several days, and concluded that putting the effort into seeking her out and seeing if she wanted to go out somewhere with her was not worth the effort.
She had spent the majority of the day in a secluded corner of the ice cream parlor with her headphones in, alternating between listening to music and pulling out a book from her bag to read. She was completely fine with being alone for a while considering she'd probably be hanging out with Damien later on in the evening. Sitting in one place for a couple hours, however, had gotten boring, and she'd decided to get up in order to have a change of environment. She found herself walking into the Tamarisk Tree, not entirely ready to go back home yet as it was only late afternoon, and promptly made her way to the counter to order something. It seemed pretty empty at the moment, which suited her just fine. In fact, she couldn't see anyone standing directly behind the counter - instead, there was just a tall boy standing near it. Assuming he worked at the Tamarisk because of the apron he was wearing, she strolled up to him, and rather than waiting for him to turn around, asked "Do you work here? Can I get a coffee?"

[ooc: is that a joke you are perfect!!]
At the sound of the loud question behind him, Lorcan turned around, a professional smile on his face. "Yes, I do and yes, you can!" He said, before stopping short. The girl in front of him wasn't much younger than he was, but she also looked very familiar. His brain tried to connect the dots as he rattled off the Tamarisk Tree's coffee selection - which there were a lot of.
In the middle of saying Very Vunderful Transylvanian Mocha he figured it out.
"Devyn!" he burst out, "I do know you!"

Devyn leaned against the counter as he turned around, opening her mouth to interrupt his lengthy list of drinks she could order to say that all she wanted was a black coffee, but he interrupted himself for her, though what he said was unexpected. Giving him a quick once over - he was attractive, she immediately realized, and he seemed to know who she was, which she would choose how to feel about depending on who he turned out to be. He only looked vaguely familiar, but she couldn't put her finger on exactly where she'd seen him before.
"Yeah, and who are you?" she replied coolly, raising an eyebrow. She almost thought that he might have been someone she'd made out with at a party the previous weekend and couldn't remember it, but that didn't sound right, so he must have known her from somewhere else. She just didn't know where - likely Hogwarts, but if so, she wasn't sure when he'd graduated.

Lorcan watched as Devyn registered his statement and reacted. Now that he thought about, he couldn't believe he hadn't recognized her more quickly - he'd dated her twin sister, for Merlin's sake. The sudden thought of that particular train wreck sent a wash of shame through him that momentarily distracted him from her question.
"Hm? Oh, sorry. I'm Lorcan! Scamander. I graduated last year - Hufflepuff?" He made a vague hand gesture that apparently was supposed to indicate his Hufflepuff-ness, but honestly just looked odd. He made a face at his hands, and then flicked his gaze to Devyn's and grinned, hoping to distract her from his strange body language.

"Oh, okay," Devyn replied, rather civilly by her standards considering she was distracted by both his antics and the recurring fact that he was attractive. It was a wonder that he knew her by name and she hadn't known him before he introduced himself - although she did know of the Scamander twins, she'd never had a real conversation with either of them, so she was baffled by how he'd seemed to recognize her so quickly. He was a Hufflepuff, but she wasn't sure if he was friends with Louis or not.
"Anyway, Lorcan," she went on lightly, testing out his name, flashing the slightest hints of a smile, and being so unusually polite that anyone who knew her well would be downright shocked if they witnessed it, "Can I just get a black coffee? That'd be great, thanks!"

Lorcan realized that Devyn didn't recognize him as well as he recognized her, and wasn't sure whether to feel relieved or not. It did mean that she probably wasn't going to be angry with him, but then he probably would have deserved it if she had gotten angry. He let out a deep breath, and mentally smacked himself upside the head. This is not the time to be melancholy and regretful, stop that. It had been over a year since he'd last seen Danni, and he was hardly a part of the Weird Sisters. It was actually a little arrogant to assume that Devyn would automatically recognize him.
"Oh, mm-hmm," Lorcan hemmed in response to Devyn's request. He was caught a little off-guard by her slight smile, and couldn't help smiling back. For some reason he'd remembered Devyn as much surlier, but he couldn't deny that her smile was very pretty. He craned his head over his shoulder as he filled her coffee cup. "I hope I'm not being offensive, but you don't really look like a black coffee type of person. Maybe more of a Hurricane - which is one of the drinks," he added quickly, "Not a weather formation - you definitely look nicer than a hurricane."

"That's not offensive," Devyn told him with a shrug, "I just don't like milk or sugar in my coffee. It takes away from the taste." She tilted her head slightly to the side as he went on, appearing completely invested in what he was saying. From what she'd seen so far, it seemed that he had a habit of saying and doing whatever came to mind at first and then stumbling over himself to fix it afterwards, and if he thought that she looked nicer than a hurricane, as he'd said, she hoped that meant he thought she looked nice - which she knew she did, but since she wasn't familiar with him at all, wasn't positive whether that was what he'd meant or not.
"Thanks, I think. I'm assuming that was a compliment," she responded lightly, still a bit thrown off by his comment but ignoring it due to his great smile. "You just graduated, then," she observed out loud, taking care to ensure that her fingers brushed his when he handed her her cup of coffee, "What have you been up to? Anything interesting other than working? Because this seems really boring," she gestured at the nearly empty Tamarisk.

"Ahhh, so you're one of those fancy people who talk about woodsy flavour and the scent of the coffee?" he made sure to keep smiling at her, so she'd know he was joking. He was a little thrown by how keenly interested she looked in what he was saying - it was kind of a weak joke, if he was honest. Actually, considering the 'nicer than a hurricane' comment from before, it was pretty clear that he definitely was not firing on all cylinders, conversationally.
Lorcan wrinkled his nose, "It was supposed to be? That... probably doesn't help much," he added with a self-deprecating shake of his head, and then looked back at her. "Yeah, it's my first summer as an independent adult. And I'm spending it wiping down tables and making fancy drinks," he brandished his cleaning cloth at her as proof, before handing the coffee over. He shot a surprised look at her when she brushed his fingers, and then it changed to a thoughtful frown. Of course, there were other reasons besides his conversation that someone would be talking to him, weren't there?
He leaned forward on the counter and flexed his ankles while he continued looking at her - one of his nervous quirks - and then realized that she'd asked him a question. "The work's not that bad, really," he said, "I've worked summers here before, and it's usually more lively..." he trailed off as he took in the Tamarisk Tree's empty surroundings, "Well, it's almost the end of my shift, so I'm almost done with being bored, right?"

"You could say that," she responded, still smiling and returning his joking tone with one of her own, "I mean, I could never do your job. Aside from the table cleaning, the drinks you probably have to make would just completely irritate me. How people drink ridiculous amounts of foam and sugar and call it coffee is beyond me. Honestly, how do you do it?"
"Well, it's the thought that counts," she pointed out, "So thank you. I'm sure you probably look nicer than a hurricane as well when you take off that apron and don't have to respond to the whims of every customer who walks in here." She paused, setting her bag on the counter and taking a sip of her coffee before going on, seeing an opportunity when he mentioned nearing the end of his shift. "Usually being the key word there. I don't believe you. Like I said, I couldn't do it. But speaking of your shift ending, what do you plan on doing after that? Please say something interesting."

"It really isn't that bad!" Lorcan protested, "I must be giving you the wrong impression if you think it's this terrible. It's kind of fun actually - meeting loads of new people, memorizing all of their finicky orders - no, you're right, that part's awful," he finished, eyes lit with amusement. "You'd actually be surprised how many weird things people ask for in their coffee, though - one person asked for blueberry syrup and pepper, if you can believe that."
Lorcan laughed nervously, "Well, thank for being nice about it, at least. I say some really stupid things sometimes. Better if I just stay behind the counter and look pretty, hm?" he said, tilting another glance her way. He laughed at her next comment. "You really have a grudge against server jobs, don't you? Are you this skeptical about everything, or just not that excited by drinks?"
He gave her a flustered look when she asked about what he was doing after his shift. "O-oh, I was just going to - look around some shops. Or head home, probably," he said, abruptly changing his statement. "Neither are that interesting, sorry. I bet you've got some exciting plans, though." He added, trying to change the subject.

"That would depend on your idea of fun," she replied teasingly, taking another sip of her coffee and nearly choking on it as he went on, setting the cup down on the counter and exclaiming, "Blueberry syrup? Is the world coming to an end? That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard." It obviously was not the most absurd thing she'd ever heard, but just the thought of someone willingly putting blueberry syrup into their coffee made her considerably more dramatic than usual.
"Well, considering you do a great job of standing behind the counter and looking pretty, I really can't criticize," she said nonchalantly, as though flirting was a talent that she'd practiced to the point of perfection even though it'd been ages since she'd properly done it, "For the record, you haven't said anything particularly stupid. I've heard far worse. Oh, and I don't have anything against server jobs. I just think it'd be boring and potentially infuriating... Some people would say that I'm skeptical about everything."
She nodded at his answer, which was almost exactly what she'd expected. "Right, right," she responded, meeting his eyes and probably feeling too confident for her own good, "I don't have any exciting plans, either, don't worry - but I was hoping to change that. Do you want to do something?"

"Well, I guess we just have very different ideas of fun, then," Lorcan said lightly, and then nearly cackled at Devyn's reaction to mention of the blueberry syrup coffee. "Imagine having to mix that drink together!" he exclaimed, "Talk about horror story." Of all the things that he'd said, Lorcan was privately amused that it had taken insulting her coffee sensibilities to really get a rise out of Devyn. "It's nice to have someone who understands how awful that kind of thing is, though." he said primly.
Lorcan gave her a charmed smile, "Do you really think so?" he said, and briefly considered striking a pose for her, before realizing that, for Merlin's sake, Scamander, that would ruin any remaining opportunities to not look like an idiot in front of a girl flirting with him pretty openly. Instead he ducked his head down, and laughed again. "Well, I guess it's a good thing that I'm pretty enough and non-skeptical enough to succeed in noble service profession, then."
He pretended to be surprised by her response, "No exciting plans? I don't believe that," he scoffed, "You look like someone who's got loads of things planned." He popped an eyebrow at her when she made her next response. "Together, you mean? I dunno," he said, a not entirely innocent smile on his lips, "Did you have something specific in mind?"

"Are you completely sure about that?" Devyn asked challengingly, though still in a joking and rather suggestive manner, "Surely there must be some overlap between what I find fun and what you find fun. And of course, it'd be an absolute trainwreck. Next time someone asks you to make a ridiculous drink just refuse for the sake of real coffee and make a dramatic exit out of here. You'd likely get fired, but it'd be totally worth it."
She laughed, shaking her head. "No, I'm just lying to your face," she feigned innocence before going on seriously, "Yes, I really think so. Why else would I say it? Are you used to girls lying to you or something?" She placed her elbows on the counter conspiratorially and leaned forward purposely in response to him raising an eyebrow at her, going on to reply, once again very casually, "I'm feeling too impulsive right now to have plans or anything specific in mind. Why, do you have anything specific in mind? If so, I'd love to hear it."

"Well," said Lorcan, this time definitely feigning innocence, "I'm sure there must be one or two things we'd both like. Maybe we could make a list?" He shook his head at her next suggestion, "Wouldn't that be a nice way to handle things? But," he lowered his voice, "this is how I make rent. It'd be a bit embarrassing if I lost this job and got kicked out of my flat by my brother."
"I - am not used to girls lying to me, actually," Lorcan mused, "I guess I have a face that inspires honesty in people." Lorcan leaned closer to hear her when she placed her elbows on the counter, leaving him hovering a few inches above her face. "Nothing wrong with being impulsive," he said, and then, properly grinning this time, added, "Honestly, the only thing I'm thinking about is whether or not you're planning to make a move."
