OLIVIA Malikah SHACKLEBOLT
A modest pureblood wizarding family that can trace its roots back to Nigeria before the transatlantic muggle slave trade, the Shacklebolts have (mostly by choice) always been on the margins of pureblood British society. Their dark skin and curiosity/exploration of African voodo practices often shoved them towards the margin, but the purity of their blood, however, caused them to inadvertently gravitate towards the center. They were even named as one of the sacred 28 in the pureblood directory published in the 1930s. During both wizarding wars the Shacklebolts found themselves solicited on all sides by both "evil" and "good" forces. Most picked the side of "good" and pledged allegiance to the order, to fight Death Eaters, but not all did. Like any minority already marginalised, some members of the Shacklebolts found allegiance with Death Eaters; they supported the status quo in order to remain somewhat privileged. Some members refused to support any side, too; choosing silence over action. Siblings Niamh and Kingsley Shacklebolt both chose good over evil, light over dark, and wrong over right, however in both Wizarding wars. Both members of the original Order of the Phoenix, Niamh and Kingsley fought the "good" fight. Kingsley, who'd been four years ahead of James Potter and company in Hogwarts, joined the Order without hesitation. Following her big brother's lead, Niamh (two years his junior) joined immediately after. During her tenure with the Order, Niamh met and fell in love with Kwame Shafiq, a fellow pureblood wizard and supposed supporter of the order. Shafiq's true allegiance, however, was to the Dark Arts, to the Death Eaters, and to Lord Voldemort. A fact that Niamh did not discover until she found herself 4 months pregnant with the couple's second child, a daughter. The couple already had a son, Tristian Shafiq. One night, during intimacy, Niamh discovered a newly mint dark mark on Kwame's arm. The spell he'd cast to hide his mark in the presence of Niamh - for lack of a better word - malfunctioned. Horror coursed through the mother to be vein's, but she did not confront Kwame. Torn as to what to do, Niamh - who trusted her brother implicitly, went to Kingsley with the information. In an aim to protect his sister, unborn-niece, and nephew, Kingsley hid them in a safe house, fearful of what Kwame may do. The war was starting to come to a head and Lord Voldemort was growing anxious, a prophecy had been laid on the table, and times were growing darker; danger was every where. Niamh had to run; order members were being hunted and the atmosphere all around was dark. It didn't matter how much she loved Kwame; they were on different sides of a war. Five months later, on September 13th, 1980, Olivia Malikah Shacklebolt was born. Despite the times she was born into, Olivia was a happy baby - well as happy as babies can possibly be. Niamh doted on her, and so did Tristan, her brother and senior of two years. Niamh gave Olivia her last name, not willing to connect her daughter with her father due to his bigotry and affiliation with Lord Voldemort. Eventually Kwame found Niamh's safe house. He confronted Niamh and threatened to remove the children from possession. He didn't want his children raised with a "blood traitor" mentality. Olivia was seven months at the time, and Tristan two - going on three years old. A fight ensued between the couple and Niamh was knocked unconscious. Kwame sought to take off with both children when Kingsley arrived, much to Kwame's chargin. Kingsley refused to let Kwame run off with his niece and nephew, and the two began to duel. The duel became so fierce that the ground beneath them began to grow hot. Kwame - who dueled to kill - fired the killing curse at Kingsley, but was caught off guard when Niamh, who'd regained consciousness threw up a shield, while a shield cannot block the killing curse, Niamh's shield wasn't fraught for not. The spell destroyed a chunk of ceiling in the path of the curse, allotting Kingsley enough time to gain his footing. Kwame, who'd already gained his footing, stormed after Kingsley, shooting another curse at him. Off balance from falling cement, and eyes full of soot, this time when Kwame shot off the killing curse, it literally reflected back at him. He'd intended to hit Kingsley, but instead hit a mirror, which rebounded the jet of green light, and hit Kwame, killing him. Devastation and horror coursed through Niamh's body; the father of her children was dead. Technically he'd been killed by his own curse - and she'd saved her brother, but nonetheless, Kwame was still dead; her children fatherless. No longer in danger, Niamh came out of hiding, only mere months before Voldemort's downfall. October 31st, 1981 the dark lord was gone, a baby - Harry Potter - had defeated him. Now a single mother with two young children, Niamh worked to rebuild her life. Kingsley stepped in and up big time, supporting his sister and family whenever needed. Olivia barely had any memories of her early life and lived as so. She never really knew that she was the daughter of the Death Eater. She grew up fairly well. Kingsley helped Naimh get a job in an entry level position in the ministry, while he began work as an auror. Naimh made certain her children never went without, either, especially Olivia. So much so in fact that she became a bit of a spoiled brat, determined to always have her way. Niamh never remarried, though she did occasionally have her flings and what not, but Olivia and Tristan were primarily raised by their mother and uncle. Kingsley was never afraid to discipline his niece and nephew either. Often more than not, when Olivia would get into trouble, Kingsley was the one to handle her. Hogwarts Years At the age of eleven, Olivia entered Hogwarts. Tristan had already spent two years behind the castle walls, and had been sorted into Slytherin. The sorting hat barely touched Olivia's curl head when it shouted SLYTHERIN! Niamh, who'd been a Gryffindor, grew nervous about her children's subsequent placements. Slytherins had the notorious reputation as dark wizards, and - from her own experiences during the first wizarding war - niamh knew the rhetoric that would be tossed at her children about their "pureness". She vowed to never let her children head down that path. Much to Niamh's wary, Olivia flourished under the house of salazar. her ambition blossomed, and she learned very quickly how to get everything she wanted - even if she did often more than not find her accomplishments over shadowed by whatever harry potter and his band of misfits were getting into for the year. coveted by the other pureblood families on the basis of blood supremacy alone, not raised to believe in the purity myth, Olivia often stayed away. when pansy parkinson - a girl in her year and dorm, suggested they be best friends because 'they were purebloods and purebloods couldn't be tainted by filth' olivia dismissed the other witches statements as absurd. Unlike his sister, however, Tristan started to fall prey to the rhetoric being tossed at them. so much so that when the chamber of secrets was opened in her second year - tristan's fourth - tristan declared that he didn't care if 'mudbloods' died, that the wizarding world needed to be pruned of its impurities. being one of the sacred 28, Tristan felt his assertions were more than correct, and began acting as so. Olivia owl'd home in nervousness to let her mum know, and Tristan was pulled from school for a chat with his Uncle Kingsley about the disasters of thinking in such manner. But Tristan didn't listen. As rumors grew about Voldemort's return, the further apart Olivia and her brother grew. Olivia, who'd found a friend in Libby Moon, a fellow Slytherin who shared her thoughts on blood purity and supremacy, feared what might happen to her brother. And then suddenly Cedric Diggory was dead, and Harry Potter was screaming 'he who must not be named' had returned. Niamh, who'd already lived through one war, wanted to taken Olivia and Tristan to Nigeria, where they had roots to avoid the war, but Kinglsey assured Niamh that that would benefit no one and that it was time - again - to chose sides. Tristan, who'd apparently been in contact with other pureblood families with known Death Eaters ties, had discovered the origins of his father's death. Niamh had told her children that their father died in war, but never how or on what side. Angry, Tristan confronted Kingsley and Niamh, blaming them for Kwame's death. That was the last straw for Tristan, who ran from home. It was her fifth year when Tristan ran, and Olivia hated to see her brother go. What was even worse was the fact that her uncle - who'd been trying very hard to assure her mother that war, though inevitable would not be on a grand scale, was injured in the battle at the Ministry of Magic by Bellatrix Lestrange. Tristan had quit school, Uncle Kingsley was injured, and the wizarding world was at war. In her sixth year things, if possible, grew even darker; Albus Dumbledore was killed on the Hogwarts grounds. Death Eaters were in the castle, and nowhere was safe. It was true: He Who Must Not Be Named had returned. Niamh was really aiming to run now. Kingsley was already ahead of her, however. Because of his known affiliation with the order, (Niamh had not rejoined, instead she was too worried about her children) Kingsley knew her niece and sister would be targets. Underground they went until Olivia, determined to return to finish her schooling, left for Hogwarts. Her seventh and final year, to be quite frank, was hell. Snape was in charge, Death Eaters were professors, and she was being tortured. Usually one for self preservation, Olivia refused to torture fellow students on the behest of the Carrow twins. They'd cackle at her refusal and tell her repeated stories of how her brother had taken the mark; then they'd torture her. She'd been forced once, under the Imperius curse, to torture Neville Longbottom - a "blood traitor" by Carrow standards. Bloodied and bruised, however, Olivia stood her ground. It wasn't until Professor Snape stepped in and reminded the Carrows that Olivia was one of the sacred 28 that she was not to be tortured any longer. The battle of Hogwarts soon was upon her, and while her house had been the first to be evacuated due to trader suspicions, Olivia picked up her wand and joined her uncle in battle. She may have been a Slytherin, but her loyalty would always be to family first. She was also shocked to find her mother standing amongst the troops set to take on Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Olivia and a few other Slytherins stayed to fight, some on the side of good, others on the side of evil. Terrified and in a literal fight of her life, Olivia fought as hard as she could. She'd only dueled in hypothetical situations and flying objects, death eaters, breaking glass, and even giants were no match for the sheer magic of Hogwarts, however. But before Hogwarts began to fight back, Olivia and her mother found themselves embroiled in a duel with a very adamant set of Death Eaters. A killing curse barely missed her at one point - and Niamh instructed her daughter to duel to kill. She'd never killed anyone before, but Olivia did as she was told. She'd been all set to go when something caught the corner of her eye, a familiar face dueling her uncle. It was her brother and Uncle - dueling. Niamh had also caught the duel and somehow managed to knock the two death eaters she and Olivia were dueling unconscious. She inserted herself into the middle of the duel, and was hit with two stunning spells; Tristan's and Kingsley's. Horrified by what he'd done, Tristan fled the castle. Olivia rushed to her mother's side, and a détente was called by Lord Voldemort. He declared that both sides had an hour to regain conscious. Amongst the dead, Olivia searched for her brother while helping her Uncle move her mother to a safe spot. Luckily Tristan had only fled and hadn't been killed later down the battlefield. Soon the hour was up and Harry Potter was declared dead. In Olivia's mind that meant the war was over. She'd fought for nothing. The battle resumed in Potter's name, however, and Olivia found herself dueling Alecto Carrow alongside a few other students. In anger and frustration, Olivia used the killing curse and watched as it faltered in power before reaching Alecto. It only served to knock the other woman unconscious, but it gave Olivia enough time to run to the great hall to see her uncle, alongside Professor McGonagall and her own Head of House Slughorn, duel Voldemort. All around Death Eater and their axes fell. But as Voldemort turned on one Molly Weasley - relief flooded through Olivia's frame. She didn't think her Uncle, while a great man, had a chance against Voldemort. And then suddenly - Harry Potter was alive! The battle ended soon after the proclamation, and the wizarding war was at rest again. She returned to school to repeat her seventh year and graduated with top marks. Post Hogwarts Graduating with top marks lead Olivia to where else, but the slowly rebuilding MoM. With her uncle being appointed, almost unanimously as the minister, Olivia worked as his assistant for her first two post Hogwarts years. She wanted to gain a feel for each position before deciding to plant herself in a more concrete position. After working for her uncle, and watching as he - along with help from some of the wizarding world's brightest, which included Hermione Granger and Harry Potter, Olivia settled into the International Magic Cooperation office. She did grunt work for a while, and before she knew it, at 22 she second in command, beating out a good section of others, including 25 year old David Campbell, an ex-Gryffindor. Brash and bullheaded, Campbell made his feelings towards Olivia's promotion well known, accusing her of using her status as the MoM niece to gain a position she wasn't prepared for. Their constant bickering and potshots drove everyone in the office insane. So much so that the head of the department sent the two on a trip to meet with the Australian magical liason office together. Sparks flew. Literally. The two loved to hate each other, and eventually the hate grew into love. Strange, really, how potshots and witty retorts turned into heated arguments that ended in bed. When the two returned to London weeks later, they attempted to keep their status as rivals up, but failed to hold the front; it was now out in the open that they were an item. Things were going well for Olivia. And then things went down hill. Roughly two years later, Niamh was sick; she'd been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. The healers at Mungo had no idea how to handle the disease. Unprepared and grossly out of time, Niamh's days were numbered. David tried his best to comfort a clearly distraught Olivia, and so did Kingsley, but she refused their help. She spent days and nights curled up in a chair next to her mother's hospital bed in muggle London. Niamh repeated one name constantly as Olivia sat vigil by her bedside: Tristan. Tristan, who'd fought on the side of Voldemort during the war, had disappeared along with many other lower level death eaters. Gone without a trace, Olivia sought out her brother, knowing full well that he'd be arrested and tried and convicted if he returned to the UK. But it was her dying mother's last wish. So, with the help of connections through her international position, Olivia searched her brother out, running into multiple dead ends consistently. She searched for months, knowing that Niamh had only a few granduals of sand left in her hour glass. One night, after a serious bout with the flu, while Olivia and David sat vigil at Niamh's bed side, Tristan showed his face. Olivia wanted to lash out at her brother in anger for his disappearing act and for his loyalty during the war, but refrained because of her mother. She stayed quiet - not even telling Kingsley that Tristan was in town. And then a few rookie aurors got wind of his presence. Still wanted for war acts, Tristan was chased by the aurors, and like their father years prior, he was killed in pursuit. Olivia, who didn't have the heart to tell her mother, simply told Niamh, who was listed as only having days left to live, that Tristan had fled, again. Two days later, Niamh succumbed to her illness. Now left to bury her brother and mother, Olivia withdrew from everyone, including David. She became stoic, going through the motions as much as she could. She buried her brother and mother together, with the help of Kingsley, and returned to work. About three months later, Olivia received the shock of her life when a woman named Aaliyah showed up on her doorstep with a little girl. The woman turned out to be Tristan's wife from Nigeria, where Tristan had been for the last six or so years. The little girl was two year old Olaniyi Shafiq, Tristan's daughter. Olivia, who missed her brother terribly and was still reeling from the loss of her mother, bonded with the young girl who had her brother's eyes, and her grandmother's smile. Aaliyah was clearly distraught after she learned her of Tristan's death. She sought to leave for Nigeria right away, but Olivia didn't want to see her go; she feared that she'd never see her niece again. Aaliyah agreed to stay in England for a while longer, but eventually decided to return to Nigeria. But before going, she surprised Olivia; she offered to share custody of Olaniyi - Lani as Olivia dubbed her, in order for the young girl to have access to a good education. Olivia agreed without hesitation, and at 24, she found herself playing mommy to her brother's daughter. Aaliyah came intermittently throughout the years to visit her daughter, and of course Olivia allowed her to. During her mother's illness, Olivia had pushed away David, but as she began to care for Lani, he slowly, but surely made his way back into her life. Eventually he asked Olivia to marry him (having first asked Kingsley for permission, a fact that almost made Olivia hit the roof), and she even surprised herself by saying yes. She'd never pictured herself as the marrying kind. But with Olaniyi in tow, the two married. Olivia became Olivia Malikah Campbell-Shacklebolt on April 13th 2005. Two years later, when Olaniyi was entering grade school for her studies, the two welcomed their first child, a girl named Niama (NYE-E- MUHA)- named for Olivia's mother. At first Olaniyi didn't take well too well to having another child in the home. It took her a minute to adjust to having to share the two people she'd come to think of as her parents, though Aaliyah did still come around. But eventually the two settled in well. Olaniyi dotted on Niama as much Olivia, and the family settled into a familiar routine. For years things seemed to go well. Eventually David was promoted to head of the International Office - only after Olivia turned it down - and Olivia became second in charge. With two little girls to raise, the family settled in nicely. Four years later (2011), at the age of 31, Olivia found herself pregnant again. This time around the pregnancy was rough. Olivia was always sick and David was constantly traveling. Left alone to contend with a 7 year old and a 3 year old, David and Olivia's relationship began to fray due to stress. Things seem to only worsen after their son Noah, was born. But neither party was willing to let go of six years of marriage. They vowed to work harder. David agreed to cutting back at work, and helping Olivia more at home. And for a while that worked. Eventually Olaniyi went off to Hogwarts, and Olivia was proud to see her sorted into Ravenclaw; she was also proud to see that the legacy of her father hadn't really followed Lani, either. Olivia managed to head back to work full time, too, using a nanny to help her with a then 7 year-old Niama and 3 year-old Noah. At this time a new member joined the international magic dept, one Mike Nesbitt. He and Olivia hit it off immediately, but it wasn't a physical attraction, at least not at first. The two enjoyed exchanging witty banter and spending late nights chatting about anything and everything. The more nights they spent together, the more Olivia found herself attracted to Mike. The attraction wasn't one sided, either. Mike made his overtures more than blatant. Olivia refrained from crossing the line for as long as she could. One night when she was working late, she gave in to temptation and that's when the affair began. For roughly eight months Olivia and Mike continued their liason, with Olivia relegating their relationship to just sex - an outlet for her to cope with stress and David's constant trips abroad, but little did she know that Mike had fallen in love. After a go around one night in her office, Mike confessed his love for Olivia, leaving her stunned. She immediately got dressed and called off their relationship, chastising Mike for falling in love. She wasn't in love; more like in lust, or rather bored. To this day she can't really figure out why she did what she did with Mike. Part of her thinks she was lonely, since David was always gone, part of her thinks it was how fast she'd found herself to be a mother of three. Whatever it was, she doesn't hate herself for her actions, but she no one quite beats her up for it like herself. Olivia is her own worst enemy. Things quieted down, and Olivia stayed away from Mike. That is until David, who didn't know about his wife's extracurriculars in their marriage, paired Olivia and Mike together for a conference in Belgium. Olivia refused to accompany Mike, and when David wanted an explanation, she refused to answer. An argument arose between David and Olivia, and soon enough Mike butted in, offering to work the conference alone. Olivia relented and went. Once they arrived in Belgium, Mike attempted to seduce Olivia, and when it didn't work, he threatened to tell David everything. Olivia threatened to make Mike's life hell if he even thought of it; she promised to go to David before he even had the chance. She promised to tell David that Mike had been making overtures at her for years, and had even tried to force himself on her. The two were at a stalemate, then. They returned to the UK and kept their distance. Olivia, however, thought it better to make good on her threat, and lobbied for Mike's dismissal, calling his work subpar and his attitude disgusting. She told David that whilst in Belgium, Mike had made blatant overtures at her; she insisted, however, that she could handle him. David insisted that she shouldn't have to, and fired him. But that didn't stop Mike from threatening Olivia with the truth. Things simmered down for a while, and Olivia even found solid footing again. She and David were solid in their relationship, and Olaniyi was thriving at Hogwarts, and soon it would be time for Niama to join her. Noah was being a busy body and all was well. But as the saying goes, the past always has a way of coming back to bite you. And it did, though not immediately. It wouldn't be until three years after the fact that David found out about his wife's affair. they'd shown up out of nowhere, pictures she hadn't even known she was in, with Mike in various states of undress. turns out he'd taken them without Olivia's knowledge. but oddly enough david didn't get angry, at least not right away; he got even. he slept with his assistant, and let olivia know. The irony here is that she'd been the one to suggest him sleeping around outside of their marriage to solve their current state of affairs. She thought that if David felt even with her, then they'd find their way back, but sadly it didn't happen that way. The relationship was broken beyond repair, though the two tried to keep things together; tried to hold on for their children. They also tried to keep their troubled relationship out of the children's minds as well. Olaniyi was in her fifth year of Hogwarts, Niama was entering her first, and Noah was seven. Try as they might, the children weren't stupid, especially not Lani, who'd blossomed into a beautiful young woman before her eyes. Choosing to separate before going the divorce route, Olivia and David kept up appearances, which only went so far, especially considering the two still worked together. Eventually Olivia began to search other avenues to work in. Kingsley offered her a spot in magical law enforcement, having known about the troubles she was facing, but Olivia declined. She'd gotten herself into the mess and she was going to get herself out. The separation soon turned into the topic of divorce, and the idea of ending thirteen years of marriage devastated her. In 2019, David and Olivia officially divorced. Fourteen years after they'd said their 'i do's.' They agreed to shared custody of their children, which included Lani, who'd come to think of David like her father. David moved out, and the children split their time between Olivia's home and their father's. Olivia didn't return to the MoM after her divorce, either. She was far too embarrassed and ashamed. Instead, she applied to teach at Hogwarts. She'd always been a potioner, having managed O's in all her courses throughout her Hogwarts career, and had kept up her potion making since. Much to her luck, too, Slughorn had decided to follow Minerva out in retirement. Olivia was granted the job - much to the dismay of her children, though she promised to keep out of their hair. She even allowed them to go solely by their father's last name just in case they felt embarrassed by her presence. A couple of years later Noah joined Hogwarts, and much to Olivia's delight he was sorted into Slytherin. Although Noah is her son, Olivia does not treat him with favour. If anything, she's harder on him, as she was on Niama. Now in her fifth year at Hogwarts, Olivia is head of Slytherin. She's trying to find solid footing again, and she's yet to really talk to her children about what happened with their father. And speaking of David, he and Olivia have found common ground, especially when it still comes to their children. Olaniyi is off working in the ministry, and Niama has just graduated. Olivia won't admit it, but David is the only man for her; she is in love with him, still, and has always been. If he'd give her the chance to truly explain and apologize. She regrets the affair, but knows that she made her bed, and now it's time to lie in it. RISS 22 ZONE |
