CALEB NATHANIEL BLACKWOOD
 the first thing most people notice about caleb blackwood is his smile. it’s almost infectious, and many have questioned its genuineness because honestly, who can be that cheerful all the time? caleb most certainly can, as he prides himself on being upbeat and optimistic about anything that comes his way, and if you get to know him, you quickly realize that it’s absolutely not a fake attitude. he always aspires to be happy and make everyone around him feel good about themselves as well, and because of his bubbly and charming nature, he has the tendency to flirt with practically everyone. most of the time it isn’t even deliberate, which has gotten him into a fair share of misunderstandings because he would never want to intentionally hurt anyone’s feelings, but it just so happens that sometimes he can be too nice. when he genuinely fancies someone, though, there’s a high chance that they might not know it for a while, as he tries to keep it a secret from everyone, including himself, trying his best to convince himself that it’s not a big deal (even when it is). this only lasts for a short time, however, because his best friend, julian delaire, tends to pick up on his feelings before he even admits them to himself. despite how kind, selfless, and easy-going caleb is, he is by no means a pushover, as he does have a more determined side that emerges if someone hurts any of the people he cares about. he doesn’t dislike people unless they give him a specific reason to, and a lot of the time it’s not because they’ve done or said something to him, but because they’ve done or said something he doesn’t like to one of his friends. he is immensely loyal and would put all of his friends’ interests above his own in a second. and then there’s the fact that his best friend would never let anyone take advantage of him, as julian is constantly there to dryly remind caleb to not be so nice to people who hardly deserve his attention. julian holds a special place in caleb’s heart - he is without a doubt the most important person to him, and caleb is always willing to drop anything and everything to be there for julian. caleb and julian’s friendship is one that still puzzles the majority of their peers because of the stark differences in their personalities, but ever since they bumped into each other on their first train journey to hogwarts, they’ve been utterly inseparable. a good share of caleb’s best memories are with julian, whether they are sitting together in silence or continually exchanging passwords of each others’ common rooms (much to the annoyance of some of their respective house-mates) or laughing as they talk about girls and have a smoke or when caleb tries to get julian to be more social, even though he likes him just the way he is and wouldn’t change anything about him or their friendship for the world. he considers julian to be a part of his family, maintaining that they are just as close as any two brothers would be. julian is not the only reason that caleb firmly believes the strongest relationships don’t necessarily have to be based on blood relations, because he also adores and greatly respects his older step-brother, dominic foster. caleb’s mother and father divorced when he was six years old, and he remained with his father, who remarried when caleb was nine years old. his new step-mother had a fifteen year old son, and caleb’s father held out hope that the two would bond so caleb wouldn’t be as lonely as he had been for the past three years. caleb still saw his mother occasionally, every other weekend or at least once a month, but it simply wasn’t the same as having her around in the house, as she had moved on and started her own life with another man, and caleb was still an only child with a single father who worked a full-time job at the ministry of magic. fortunately, his father’s wishes came true, and despite their six year age gap, caleb and dominic got along extremely well, dominic harboring protective feelings towards caleb from the start since he was an only child as well, and was thus no longer the youngest, now with a nine year old brother to take care of and teach things. caleb looks up to dominic and sees him as a role model, never feeling awkward or uncomfortable asking him for advice on things going on in his life. caleb’s step-mother made a huge effort to be a good mother to him, and he was receptive to it and respected her even at the young age of nine, though he never let himself get immensely attached to her, secretly thinking that she would one day leave him just as his mother had left him, although he was aware that his mother and father’s separation had been a mutual decision. he still has a good relationship with his step-mother and is glad that his father got a second chance at happiness, because all he really wants is for everyone he loves to be happy. this applies to his mother, too, who he knows has a family of her own, but he doesn’t resent her at all for that, even if it means he only sees her over the holidays. he has gotten used to having two christmases each year - one with his father, step-mother, and dominic that is always festive and hilarious and uplifting, and one evening of dinner and gift-opening with his mother, her husband, and their children that tends to be rather awkward. caleb’s father wants him to work at the ministry when he graduates hogwarts, but at the same time doesn’t put any particular pressure on him to do so if he doesn’t want to, because more than his desire to see his son succeed the way he has, he wants the best for him, whatever that may mean. caleb got average results on his OWLs - nothing terrible, but nothing spectacular, either (except for transfiguration and charms, in which he got o’s). he does put a great deal of work into revising and nearly all of his professors can attest to how bright he is, but his intelligence doesn’t consistently translate into exceptional marks, and he’s fine with that. everyone knows that he really enjoys drawing and sketching artwork, but no one except julian knows that he’d like to make a career out of it one day if he could, because he feels like it’s too dumb and unrealistic to be anything that he should being aspiring for or sharing with people. that doesn’t stop him from drawing in his spare time, though, and he finds that his drawings are usually good enough to make decent gifts to friends who he thinks might be having a bad day. he’d also love to travel in the near future, to see what the world has to offer because there’s so much out there that he hasn’t seen yet and he has his whole life ahead of him to live and laugh and love, so why not do it in as many places as possible? he and julian often make plans to go off and see the rest of the world, and he would likely jump at the first opportunity to do so. gif © turnpikedarling @ tumblr HOPE EIGHTEEN EST |
