JULIAN JAMES DELAIRE
THE LIST OF PEOPLE JULIAN DELAIRE ACTUALLY LIKES:
otherwise? he probably doesn't like you. quiet, guarded, and a bit of a loner ("a bit?" caleb would laugh, "you mean a lot?"), julian delaire has not bothered to make much of a name for himself in his past five years at hogwarts. sorted easily into slytherin upon his arrival, he has isolated himself from the vast majority of his classmates, with a few exceptions. in fact, many people wonder exactly how it is that a perpetual loner from slytherin ended up best friends with a hufflepuff. well, it begins with a deadbeat dad and a young single mother trying very hard to make sure her child grows up right. the truth is, julian doesn't even know his father's name. he's seen pictures lying around his house, old and faded and crumpled up many times, of a man who looks distressingly similar to him, right down to the eyes and nose and cheekbones. the man is always smiling in the pictures, always with his arms around amelia, always looking thrilled to be where he is. and yet, he left them. julian's never asked for his name because he doesn't want to know. he doesn't want to hear about the man who abandoned his mother just because she was a witch (he's picked up the story over the years and many overheard tearfilled phone conversations between his mother and his aunt). he carries the man's genes in him, and that's all he wants from his father. in fact, he would probably prefer to have inherited even less. in his eyes, his mother is beautiful, and if he could have her blue eyes or her long, curly red hair, he'd give up the traces of his birth father in an instant. as it is, he's stuck being a visual reminder to her mother of the man she loved for the rest of his life. and he hates it, no matter how much amelia reassures her son that he's wonderful, that she loves him, that she wouldn't change how he is for anything. but he doesn't think his resentment of his father is ever truly going to fade. growing up, amelia worked very hard to make sure her son didn't want for anything, despite living on only her salary. she worked two jobs, one as a waitress, one as a sales assistant at a muggle mall, which got exhausting and stressful, but in her eyes, it was all worth it. julian grew up in a quiet home, just him and his mother, and sometimes her siblings would stop by to spoil their nephew with gifts she probably couldn't afford. she's always wished she could have given him more, but julian would never ask for anything else. he's always been happy with just his mother, knowing how hard she's worked for him and loving her all the more. the result of his childhood is a total mama's boy, a part of his personality that he doesn't share with most people - not because he's embarrassed, far from it, but because he doesn't think any part of his life is really anyone else's business unless he chooses it to be. in fact, he doesn't share much with most people, including the abandonment by his father. there is only one person he's met in his adolescence so far who actually knows the truth of julian's home and history, and that's his best friend, caleb blackwood. julian and caleb's friendship appears, on the surface, to be an odd one to most people. a slytherin and a hufflepuff, both from different family social circles, as best friends? the two of them met on the train that first day traveling to hogwarts when they were eleven, and something just clicked. they've been practically inseperable ever since. most of their classmates don't quite understand, especially since julian likes to shut out everyone else who approaches him, but somehow, caleb got through his walls. sometimes, julian thinks the sorting hat placed him in slytherin because there was really nowhere else he fit. he's hardly your textbook slytherin - not any more cunning or manipulative than your average teenager, and though he has ambition, he probably has equal amounts of bravery, or loyalty, or intelligence. the fact is, he doesn't think he fits into any house, really. gryffindors are too bold and brash, hufflepuffs far too kind and fair (though, he does like to think he could have done well in hufflepuff, with caleb at his side), and as much as he's a good student, he's not really into the whole knowledge for knowledge's sake thing. so, slytherin it is. he doesn't mind it too much - some of his classmates can be awful, but he mostly knows not to let snide comments bother him, especially about caleb, because caleb has always encouraged him not to lash out (and he can take care of himself). when it comes to remarks about his mother, though, all bets are off. luckily, after five years, the majority of slytherin house understands to leave him alone for the most part. and the truth is, he fits in okay. over the years, he's come to realize that he wants to be a curse-breaker when he leaves, which possibly qualifies him as ambitious enough to belong properly in slytherin. of course, that's not the only thing he wants once he graduates - he wants to travel the world, he wants to give his mother everything she deserves, he wants to study the pyramids in egypt and search for the lost city of atlantis and live in the amazon rainforest for a week, or a month, or a day. mostly, he wants to get out of the rainy, gloomy english countryside and try to live his life without the shadow of his father looming over him the way it has here in britain.
