PRIYANKA ANISAH SHARMA
on close inspection of herself, priyanka sharma is not entirely certain if she is altogether satisfied with what she sees, what others see. poised and collected, she stands a fraction taller than most other girls she knows, blessed with long legs and high cheekbones and yet aggravated by a nose she deems too long, a smile that so many others have dubbed radiant but she views as awkward, reluctant, almost. a true smile from priyanka is rather hard-won; she has a sweet disposition, but usually people are only awarded a guarded, self-possessed half-smile, lips still closed together. it is only when someone has really pleased her that she smiles fully, and her eyes light up, and generally the only person able to provoke such a reaction is her older brother, varun. she doesn't look favourably upon being fourteen. it has never been an age she has thought much of - fifteen is when you really start being seen as a true teenager, in her opinion, sixteen when all of the rebellion appears to flood out of people uncontrollably, and then seventeen is when life begins, really. fourteen is awkward, with everyone's hormones seeming to go into an absolute frenzy and personalities still being formed and everyone striving to be something they're not. plus, although she is often told how mature and sophisticated she seems for her age, how in-control she always appears, she often feels faint, childish worries niggling at the back of her mind, coursing through her body - she knows she shouldn't care, but she wonders if boys will ever fancy her, if a boy will ever love her, if she is expected to have kissed someone at the age of fourteen. she once held hands with a boy, at the age of eleven, and his palm was thoroughly sweaty and disgusting, and he leaned in to kiss her, but she had ducked, face burning. he hadn't been very impressed, but she had wriggled away from him, not wanting his mouth anywhere near hers. she had told him, very confidently indeed (although her knees had been shaking) that she certainly wasn't old enough to kiss a boy. now, however, she feels as though it may be expected. it can be difficult for her to keep these thoughts in check, to remind herself that these are silly, naive notions, pushed upon her by society and the media. she likes to keep every floating fancy in order, she enjoys keeping things practical. as long as she is on top of everything she thinks, she can control as much as is possible, but these thoughts are so ridiculous and ingrained into what appears to be everyone's mind that she simply can't control them. she could very easily be categorized as a good girl. she doesn't drink, nor does she smoke, and she's never sat a detention in her three years so far at hogwarts. her grades have been positively outstanding, and she's respectful and polite. she holds herself gracefully, something she sort of trained herself to do, and she doesn't stir up trouble. she studies a tremendous amount, and she's very unapologetic about her smarts - she was sorted into ravenclaw in the blink of an eye and nobody could ever doubt that that's where she belongs, because she's sharp, and not only does she do impeccably in lessons, but she's able to think on her feet, as well. she simply won't allow herself to not take pride in her grades, because she works very hard for them and she strives to make sure that she is always top of the class. without being too aware of it, she radiates a certain confidence and knowing, which can sometimes create feelings of disdain towards her, particularly from people her own age. despite this, however, priyanka is not uppity - from a distance, she may appear so, but on closer inspection, she's agreeable and kind, sweet and somewhat shy, although willing to make friends with almost anybody. she doesn't fly into rages, nor is she easy to provoke - she very much likes to keep in control of herself and not often is her anger piqued, although when it is she doesn't shriek or flail or yell. she finds that sort of performance very embarrassing indeed, and if angry she will probably direct a few sharp words at the person, stew over it for a while and then force herself to get over it. her sense of humour is surprisingly wicked at times, too - although she wouldn't go in for playing pranks herself, she'd always find them terribly amusing and be impressed by anyone who did, and she catches on to dirty jokes far quicker than most people would assume. her opinion of herself is riddled with doubts. she's aware that she is clever, aware that she is not wholly unattractive, aware that she is not clumsy. she comes across as confident and capable, and to an extent, she is - but she never quite imagines herself as someone people would really and truly like. if a boy was flirting with her, she probably wouldn't even notice it, because it would hardly occur to her that someone would even bother their head to be interested in her. she also feels quite an amount of pressure to succeed, and not only that - to be pretty, to be good, to be funny, to be playful, and yet sophisticated and mature. to have friends, and yet not neglect her studies. the list is almost endless, and she berates herself for feeling this pressure, for she is aware that it is her poor brother, varun, who has had to deal with their father criticizing and pressuring for such a very, very long time. priyanka idolizes her brother, varun. she views him as charming and a dare-devil and funny and he seems to sure of himself to her. she wishes, sometimes, that she could live her life with the reckless abandon he seems to. she is always very well-pressed, well turned-out, with her clothes washed and although her hair is tied up it is done to perfection, a few curly tendrils falling down gently either side of her face. she can sometimes get irritated with varun consistently treating her like a child, and will tell him so, although she doesn't allow herself to be too bothered by it. she feels as though having him as a brother has toughened her up, as well - when they were younger, he would never treat her as though she was five years younger and far more delicate, and although there is still a delicacy to her now, her threshold for pain is surprisingly high and she can handle herself well. supple and healthy, she'll still climb a tree every now and then, when no-one's around to call her childish. in fact, she frequently does it at hogwarts, propping herself up on one of the branches and reading a book when she's bored. she sometimes wishes wistfully that she could be a daddy's little girl, as she is the apple of varun's eye, but she can be somewhat intimidated by their father, although she holds her ground. he is strict and likes the line to be toed, and she is not very impressed, nor has she ever been, by his constant pressurizing of varun, and the fact that he does not seem to like that varun is still living with them, nor the fact that varun is a bartender. he looks favourably towards priyanka, for her stellar grades and the fact that she seems to fit into exactly how he wants her to be - reserved, yet friendly, clever and ambitious, hard-working, graceful. in ways, she wishes that she could reject this, that she could not fit so perfectly into being the ideal girl, but she doesn't think she can shake it off altogether. she's confused about her feelings towards her father, as they're so conflicted. on one side, she wants to be a daddy's little girl, and properly - she jealously surveys other girls winding their fathers up, laughing and joking with their dads and twirling them around their little finger in a way she has never been able to do. on the other hand, she wants to fling the fact that she fits into his expectations right back into his face. she never shows this, however; priyanka is a guarded person - although when speaking to her, people are met with a sweet, cheerful, interested face, and intelligent conversation, she's not quite so open as others assume, and it would surprise many how much she keeps her thoughts to herself, how careful she is with her words. in a way, she keeps herself secret and guarded because she does not want to be seen as vulnerable. she would be far too embarrassed to ever confess being attracted to, let alone fancying, someone, and she does not often voice her innermost thoughts. she keeps her conversations light and breezy usually, unless with close friends, and even then she continues to protect herself and never lets too much be said. she worries deeply about really and truly letting anyone in, scared that they will see past the sort of facade she has set up for herself and dub her as a faker. she's got a very caring, mothering streak as well, particularly towards varun and her lovely mother, whom she adores, but it extends to others. she can't bear to see others crying, and although she's not very easily brought to tears herself, she's warm-hearted and will always lend a helping hand to someone. the problem with this, however, is that she gets too invested in other people's problems, not giving herself enough time for her own, and allows them to consume her. she is constantly taking care of others and not paying enough attention to herself. she tries to stay away from the insecure part of her, the deeper, darker thoughts, instead focusing on being organized, studying up, making her appearance spotless, portraying herself as what she desperately wants to be. the past three years at hogwarts have been rather unimpressive for her. she is a mess of contradictions, and it took a while for her classmates to understand her fully, and very few of them do now, even though they have a somewhat better grasp on who she is. although she appears delicate and sweet in some cases, there is something tougher underneath, and the disarming sense of confidence and awareness tends to cause uneasiness in others. she's friendly and her social circle is constantly blooming, but she doesn't crave the spot-light, preferring to be on the fringes rather than right in the middle. she's organized and capable and independent, and if someone bothers, there's a mischievous streak hidden underneath it all, unleashed every now and again. she still feels as if nobody really and truly knows her and understands her, even though she's well aware that this is such a typically teenage thing to think. she loves her mother for her sweetness and absolutely adores her brother for his sense of fun and the fact that he is so unabashed about showing his true emotions, and she does care very much for her father, although her feelings towards her are conflicted. but she dearly wishes for someone who isn't related to her to notice something in her, to consider her special, to stay up with her all night and talk about this and that, to hear all of her secrets and understand everything about her and not be scared, and for her not to feel vulnerable. she realises it's a ridiculous romantic notion - and she's hardly a romantic - but she wants it nonetheless. altogether, however, she is content. she has her brother staying at home, and the long, lazy days of summer stretched out in front of her, and three more years until what she considers to be her real life begins. she's going to reign over every childish, naive fancy of hers and rule herself perfectly one day - she'll make sure of it.
