 seventeen years old and pretty as a picture, elayna summerfield is the one and only child of matthew summerfield and isobel carrington, raised in relative happiness and luxury her whole life. that's not to say her family is actually picture-perfect - or that she doesn't have siblings, for that matter. isobel met matthew when she had a four-year-old son named flynn whose father was locked in jail for manslaughter. and though she loved flynn's father with all her heart, he wasn't around to be a father to his son, and she fell for matthew over the course of a year or so until they got married and she took his last name, having never been officially married to flynn's father before he was locked up. matthew took flynn in as his own, loving and caring for the boy and raising him as if he were his own son, and flynn grew up as a summerfield as well, despite not being matthew's son by birth. meanwhile, matthew, a muggleborn gryffindor with a family business empire ready to inherit from his father as ceo, already had a daughter, emilia, with his hogwarts girlfriend, olivia jameson, whom he married fresh out of school when they were both too young to really make a marriage work, let alone with a baby added to the picture. between pressure from matthew's rather elitest muggle family to find himself a nicer girl who would make an acceptable wife according to the social circles they ran in and the stress of caring for a newborn baby girl while they were too young to really be adults themselves, the two fell out of love and broke it off not long after emilia was born, getting a quiet divorce so matthew's family could wave it all away like a bad dream. some time after that, matthew met isobel and the two fell in love; thankfully, his family much preferred gracious, compassionate isobel as his wife, and after a whirlwind courtship of a year, the two were married in a beautiful ceremony, much unlike the shotgun wedding matthew had with olivia, where flynn was the ring-bearer and both their families attended to celebrate their happines. though they were still rather young, both were old enough now to be able to make a marriage work, and matthew moved up the corporate ladder steadily and succeeded his father as ceo, choosing the muggle world over the wizard. though, he still kept in touch with his wizard roots, especially having married a witch again and raising her wizard son as his own, and he and isobel settled into a happy life in the middle of both their worlds (isobel herself was a half-blood and understood how to make living in both worlds work). just a year or two after their wedding, when flynn was six years old and emillia (whom matthew had joint custody over, so she visited him often, and olivia and matthew managed to become friends after some time and so the children grew up in a fairly blended family) was three, isobel and matthew had a child of their own, and elayna summerfield was brought into the world with an older half-brother and half-sister, the product of her parents' first truly happy union. as she was raised in the same house as flynn, elayna spared no thought to the idea that he wasn't her full brother, always adoring him and wanting to follow him everywhere. though they of course had some sibling rivalry and fights, especially in their younger years when the age difference mattered a great deal more to flynn, they still loved each other and now that they're both older, they get along even better, much to matthew and isobel's pride. the two of them treat each other like any other siblings would, even though elayna knows he has a different father (but she doesn't know the truth of what happened with his father, as nobody has told her), she loves him just the same as if he were her real brother. with emilia, things are a bit different, as she only lives with them some of the time due to the complicated joint custody that matthew and olivia worked out. emilia has resented elayna's birth on account of her father having another daughter that she felt was going to replace her. although, of course, matthew loves both his daughters equally, the resentment didn't exactly disappear over time. elayna, as a little girl, admired her elder sister quite a lot, always wanting to play with her when emilia was over, not realizing emilia may have found it annoying. although the two of them were reluctant friends (reluctant on emilia's part, mostly, though she did enjoy playing with another girl as opposed to just flynn when she visited) in childhood, always being paired together at family functions and the like, emilia took entering adolescence to mean she didn't need her sister anymore, as now she had friends at hogwarts, and so she distanced herself from elayna, who was still too young to attend the school. elayna was terribly sad about this, but three years after emilia, she entered hogwarts as well and was able to grow into her own person, without her siblings around to overshadow her, though she did overlap flynn by one year and emilia by three. determined not to let emilia get to her with her suddenly-snarky comments, no doubt developed by her placement into slytherin house, elayna made herself toughen up in response and now the two of them mostly bicker a lot when they're in the same room, though there is some underlying affection in their relationship, if they'd ever let it come to the surface. still, despite her complicated relationship with her sister, whom she still loves even after everything, elayna is fairly happy and well-settled into hogwarts as she heads into her seventh year. she was sorted into hufflepuff upon her arrival at hogwarts, and she fits in perfectly in that house, always having been loyal and hard-working, with a strong sense of justice (hermione granger is kind of her hero), partly due to her mother heading a charity orphanage she founded while elayna was young and growing up around an atmosphere of wanting to help people and the world in general. she's a perfectionist, therefore always working to make sure she does things right, and she's a model student as a result. though she was raised pretty high-class thanks to her father's inheritance and high-paying job, she still finds it easy to relate to people of all walks of life, from every house, as long as they're nice to her and to others. she values compassion and kindness, and is definitely the girl you want on your side if you're going through a tough time, because she will bake you her hufflepuff-renowned gingerbread cookies and pass you tissues while you cry on her shoulder. she is also, though she will deny this, very squeamish about a lot of things, mostly due to being the most sheltered of all her siblings, and blushes a lot if anyone talks to her about sex. she's definitely never done it before, though she has gone on a few nice dates with boys and even kissed a few, but she's never been the snogging-in-broom-cupboards type of girl, preferring sweet romantic dates and kissing in the open sunshine at hogsmeade or diagon alley or some other nice place a boy happens to take her. she hasn't had a serious relationship yet, though she's dated a few boys steadily for a couple months or so each. but she is a romantic at heart, and is holding out for the one, the guy of her dreams - she doesn't know what he looks like yet, but she's a firm believer in love at first sight and says she'll know true love when she feels it. of all her classes at hogwarts, elayna loves astronomy and care of magical creatures the most as she's the type of girl to love fresh air and the outdoors. she's been a dancer since she was little, specializing in ballet and also figure skating from the lessons her parents put her in, and so being in open spaces is much preferable to her than sitting in a stuffy classroom. she also adores animals, owning a cat and an owl herself, and always dreaming of one day seeing a phoenix, which she has been obsessed with since she was a little girl. her life aspirations including having a phoenix of her own as well as possibly opening up her own dance studio once she's graduated hogwarts, after properly learning business from her parents, both of whom know a thing or two to teach her. she also wants to visit new york and see a broadway show (or ten) and help out with her mother's orphanage, as she is deeply empathetic and is already always helping out around the orphanage when she's home for the summer. and of course, she's still waiting on her prince charming to come around, holding onto the belief that everyone deserves a fairytale happy ending in life.
