SAMUEL EMERSON STANLEY
Boring. Uninteresting. Monotonous. Dull. Spiritless. Mundane. Listless. Dormant. Lifeless. Those are just some of the ways Samuel Stanley's creative, yet cruel, sisters have described him in the past. There have been plenty of other descriptions or names, but he doesn't care to recall any of them. Because words hurt and Sam doesn't believe in using words to hurt people. Words leave permanent scars. That's just one of the differences between Sam and his two younger sisters - especially Zanna, the middle child who write satirical material. A very fitting job for her, if you ask Sam. As for Faye, well... Sam doesn't have much to say about her. She doesn't have a job, but she's hurt him in the past with her words. And the worse part of it all: neither of them seem to care. Though perhaps some of those words ring true (Sam likes rules and structure, is that a crime?), the one that hurts the most is lifeless. He can't remember which sister said it, but he does remember wanting to explode on them. He wanted to scream at them, tell them of his struggles as a teenagers; but he knew that it would all be for naught: they wouldn't blink an eye. They would probably laugh at his pain and he would rather be saved the ridicule. So Sam swallowed down all of the pain and walked away. He doesn't keep in touch with his siblings much - or his parents, for that matter. He loves them, which is why everything hurts so much; but it's easier to stay away. Samuel Emerson Stanley was born on January 4th, 1998. Born during the middle of a war, Sam's father was hiding from the wizarding world in order to stay alive. He fell in love with a muggle women, they married and Sam was born. His parents are very much into art, but Sam never was. He didn't like finger-painting as a child because the paint on his fingers irritated him and he hated when it would get stuck under his nails for days. Coloring was okay, but when the wax crayons broke in half, he got upset. He hated arts and crafts, especially if it involved any sort of glue. Art wasn't for him and his parents eventually realized that, leaving him alone when they had a new child to look after and raise. A younger sister nicknamed Zanna, Sam was glad his parents got off his back about his "creativity". Sam preferred to play with his Legos and other things that; he likes making structures and when things didn't make his hands sticky. When Zanna could crawl, most of his masterpieces were destroyed. One time - and one time only - Sam grabbed the nearest thing to him (a case of unopened Legos) and threw it at his sister. From the very beginning, their relationship was doomed. The older Sam got, the more he realized that he was different from his family. They all seemed so creative and that just wasn't him. He couldn't make up bedtime stories or any story, for that matter. He was more logical. He followed the rules at school and got bullied for it. Sam doesn't like to rock the boat, so he wouldn't stick up for himself. His parents tried to tell him that if he was being bullied, then he needed to tell someone about it - and if he fought back, he wouldn't get in trouble. No matter how hard Sam tried, though, he couldn't explain to them that both of those options would make things worse. Telling an adult made him a "tattle tale" and the bullying would get worse; fighting back wouldn't make him any better than the bullies. What sense did fighting violence with violence make? So he continued to be bullied, physically and verbally (therefore emotionally and psychologically) up until he went to Hogwarts. At this point, Sam had another young sibling. Another sister; she was called Faye. They were 9 years apart. Going to Hogwarts was a relief for Sam. He got away from his parents and his sisters. For the first time in 11 years, he felt as if he could breathe. The feeling was nice; he hadn't realized how smothered he felt being born into the Stanley family. They weren't completely horrible, but Sam felt like a disappointment to his parents and his sisters... well, the girls got on, but Sam never quite got on with his sisters. Hogwarts was his way to start over, to make a new "life" for himself. As with the primary school he went to, Sam followed the rules of Hogwarts. Only this time he didn't get bullied for it. Other students followed the rules as well, so there wasn't any reason to bully him. Sam liked Hogwarts. He liked learning about magic. He thrived at the school, finding it much easier to make friends there than at the muggle school he had attended before. Sam was sorted in Ravenclaw, which is commonly known as the house were the intelligent students are sorted into. His parents congratulated him, however he knew that once his sisters found out what each house was commonly known for, he would never hear the end of it. But Sam embraced his intelligence and his house and his magic. He was like a new person. But not everything good can last, and there always seemed to be a dark cloud following behind Sam. For two years, everything was perfect. But when Sam entered his 3rd year at Hogwarts, things began to change. His friends and housemates thought that being 13 was a huge deal - after all, now they were teenagers. Sam didn't understand their point; they were just another year older and just because they were teens didn't mean anything special. His friends disagreed. Once more, Sam found himself on the outside looking in. He wasn't bullied at Hogwarts; he was quite good at magic, so no one bothered to do anything to him. Seeing as his friends were off experimenting with their new-found teenagerness, Sam was mostly alone. He still had friends, of course, but he didn't really fit in with anyone. He felt alone, just like he did at home. This would mark the beginning of Sam's lifelong battle with depression. Sam did his best to ignore how he was feeling. By the time he was fifteen, however, he was having suicidal thoughts. To make things worse, Zanna was at Hogwarts with him. Thankfully, they were in different houses and didn't interact much. But, still, Sam feared that his younger sister would one-up him somehow. But he tried to concentrate on himself and his studies and - much to everyone's surprise - his girlfriend. That's right; Sam Stanley managed to get a girlfriend. It wasn't that difficult, though, because despite his studious tendencies, he had always been quite attractive. For the rest of his time at Hogwarts, Sam continued to struggle with his depression and his suicidal thoughts. He never told anyone and his depression eventually lead to his break-up with his first girlfriend. When he learned how to brew the Elixir to Induce Euphoria, Sam began sneaking ingredients to make small batches for himself to take everyday. It helped with his mood and his depression. Upon graduating from Hogwarts, Sam looked high and low for a job, wanting to escape his house and his family. His depression and suicidal thoughts were slowly creeping back into his life, now that he didn't have a steady source of Elixir to Induce Euphoria. Thankfully, he found a low-end position in the Ministry. They were night shifts and he worked with a few other young witches and wizards, cleaning the Ministry of Magic. Afterwards, they would go out of drinks and thus began Sam's abuse with alcohol. When Sam was 19, he got particularly drunk one night after working. His buddies helped him home and left him alone on his couch. One friend stayed behind just in case. Since alcohol is a downer (and not an upper, like most people think), Sam began to spiral out of control until he slit his wrists. The friend that stayed behind was shocked and frightened, and immediately brought Sam to St. Mungo's, where they healed him. They forced Sam to stay and, when he was sober, they did an intake evaluation on him. He was admitted to the hospital for a week. Sam has always kept this to himself; he never told his family about that night or that week. He didn't speak to them much, anyway, so there was no reason for them to assume that there was something wrong with him. During his week-stay at the in-patient section of St. Mungo's, Sam met became friendly with another patient. She was a little older than he was and had a longer stay, but they kept in touch after he left. When she was released, they began to date. Their relationship lasted for three years. During that time, Sam managed to score a job at the Ministry again - this time, in the Department of Magical Transportation. He loved his job. It was simple and easy and there was only one way to get to an answer. That was what he liked. Logic, structure and simplicity. After breaking it off with his then longtime girlfriend (who was hospitalized again), it was another year before Sam found himself in another relationship. He vaguely remembers going to school with the woman, who is named Elena. She works in the same department as Sam. These days, Sam finds himself happier than ever. He is very happy and satisfied in his two-year relationship with Elena, and he continues to love his job. His sister thinks he's boring and he's slowly accepting the fact that maybe he is. He's in therapy and on a small, daily dose of Elixir to Induce Euphoria. Elena knows everything about his past and they are very happy together. Sam thinks, for the first time, that he is beginning to find his way in the world. HANNA 24 GMT -5 |
