DEVYN EVA OBERLIN
YOU SHOUT IT OUT BUT I CAN’T HEAR A WORD YOU SAY unsurprisingly enough, devyn oberlin has made a habit of tracing the majority of her problems back to the minute she was born on april 19, 2007 because her twin sister, danni, was born ten minutes prior and has never let her forget it. devyn secretly believes that her sister has outshone her in every aspect possible from the moment their parents held them for the first time and onwards, still feeling terribly inadequate in danni’s presence from time to time – but this is just one secret of many that she’s held on to tightly for ages and will not easily let slip. no matter what type of mask she puts on, the truth is that devyn loves her sister more than she can describe in words, and deep down she realizes that her insecurities are mostly unwarranted. she just can't bear to completely admit that to herself yet. devyn and danni’s relationship is complicated to the point where no one, including their own parents, chace and evelyn oberlin, can pretend like they fully understand it. there was a time when devyn and danni got along like proper sisters and it was nearly impossible to tell them apart when they were in a room together because they never left each other's side. age had a lot to do with the walls that built up between them, as devyn's resentment of her twin developed gradually as they grew up, the differences in their personalities as they developed from toddlers to children to teenagers becoming all the more apparent. from as far back as devyn can remember up until about the age of seven, the two were inseparable, always sharing their toys, playing games together, never getting bored in each other's company, whining when the other wasn’t around, and obstinately refusing to sleep in two rooms instead of one. their relatives continuously reminded them as the years passed by precisely how much they'd adored one another in the days of their childhood, but once devyn made up her mind about the situation she simply refused to listen. her stubbornness, along with her wit and manipulative nature was evident from a young age – she never quite went out of her way to tell lies, but she always knew the right thing to say in a given situation to get things to work out in her favor. I’M TALKING LOUD NOT SAYING MUCH the cracks in devyn and danni's relationship began to slowly form when they both headed off to muggle primary school at the age of five – neither knew what was in store for them, because they'd never really interacted with other children their age for long periods of time. there were occasionally trips to busy playgrounds, and visits from children around the same age of chace and evelyn's various friends, but not many times when they'd socialize with those children on a regular basis. chace and evelyn weren't on a mission to shield their daughters from having friends when they were younger, but instead they were constantly noting how happy devyn and danni were simply with one another, so they never felt the need to force other friends upon them. in school, of course, devyn and danni were in a classroom with other children who they saw day after day and eventually got to know, and this was an new experience for both sisters. the way devyn sees it is that danni managed to break out of her shell (though even at home, she had constantly been the louder out of the two) and make loads of friends because she was so outgoing and bright and open to being close with other kids, whereas devyn was quiet, reserved, and unable to take the steps to making friends like danni had. devyn kept to herself, barely interacting with her classmates and focusing all her attention on schoolwork and being the best at that at least, feeling absolutely devastated when danni made next to no attempts to include her in her new group of friends. that being said, devyn wasn't shy by any means – she could easily butt into conversations and make her opinion known similarly to her sister if she felt like it, but she really didn't think any of her classmates were worth the effort. most of them had taken danni away from her, she believed, and even worse, danni had betrayed her by moving on to more interesting people. devyn didn't have the energy to do anything but watch and pile her anger up inside as danni slowly slipped away from her. these tensions didn't become known to danni and their parents until around two years later, when devyn couldn't handle keeping it all to herself anymore. I’M CRITICIZED, BUT ALL YOUR BULLETS RICOCHET YOU SHOOT ME DOWN, BUT I GET UP evelyn and chace oberlin didn't particularly spoil their daughters, but it’s safe to say that they had a pretty easy–going childhood. devyn grew up, for the most part, in scotland, where the four of them were happily settled because evelyn’s entire family resided there. it wasn’t until the twins turned nine that their mother and father decided to relocate to england, where they’d initially met and not long after gotten married, because chace had received a decent offer of promotion from his muggle workplace as long as he was willing to move. evelyn, who was a healer, worked at st. mungo's and apparated to and from there so it didn't pose a significant problem for her aside from seeing her own side of the family less often. during the time around when the family moved to england, devyn and danni had moved into separate rooms and made their feud clear, leaving their mother and father concerned. nonetheless, things brightened up for everyone when the girls' hogwarts letters arrived, and evelyn and chace firmly held on to the hope that devyn and danni would get over their ongoing fight and work things out when they reached hogwarts. however, with devyn being sorted into slytherin and danni into gryffindor without the sorting hat considering alternate houses for either of them for even a moment, the distance between them inevitably largened. regardless of what she claims, devyn constantly kept a careful eye on danni and the new friends she was making at hogwarts, being sure to look out for her in case she ever got into trouble. she cared about what her sister was up to, but of course wanted to keep this fact hidden. devyn settled in well in slytherin – her parents had anticipated her to be sorted there or in ravenclaw – but that's not to say that she immediately made friends. she’d never had an abundance of friends like her sister to begin with, but hogwarts was the next level up from primary school. in her mind, she was there to become the top of her class no matter what, and that’s where she set her sights very early on rather than socializing, which she considered a waste of time, especially because like in primary school, there was no one she immediately saw as worthy of her attention. she didn't make this much of a secret, either, becoming widely recognized throughout her house as the go to for a cold attitude and sarcastic and condescending comments twenty–four seven. she did, however, stumble upon a boy that she actually took the time to get to know – his name was damien malfoy, and he was the first person she’d encountered at hogwarts who seemed to be actual competition in terms of beating her in an argument. she would obviously never admit this, and somehow the two ended up best friends after several ridiculous conversations in the slytherin common room and table at the great hall. they never stopped being best friends, but they also unfortunately never stopped being ridiculous and insulting and overly dramatic to one another, either. damien is the one person that devyn knows she can talk to about absolutely anything, and although he’ll act as though he’s judging her and make a scene out of it depending on what it is, she knows that deep down he truly cares about her, and she would likewise (albeit begrudgingly) do anything for him. I’M BULLETPROOF, NOTHING TO LOSE, FIRE AWAY, FIRE AWAY RICOCHET, TAKE YOUR AIM, FIRE AWAY, FIRE AWAY devyn has worked extremely hard at hogwarts and excelled in all of her lessons, earning top marks nearly every time around. she is the student who leans back lazily in their chair in class, never taking the initiative to raise her hand to give an answer – which was a major reason that many of her classmates underestimated her at first – and then will confidently state the right answer when the professor calls on her because she’s looking terribly bored and inattentive. in the beginning of her hogwarts career, she would excitedly write to her parents about her results and be disappointed as they replied with little praise or pride but more worry about danni and how she was doing and why the two of them still hadn’t made up yet. devyn saw this as further cause to validate growing apart from danni because obviously she was the twin that their mum and dad preferred best. it already seemed that nothing she did would ever compare, and she had to wonder on occasion what danni possibly wrote about to their parents which made them put such a great interest in her instead of devyn. from then onwards, she wrote letters to her parents sparingly, which they protested down the road, but devyn didn't care to explain her reasoning behind it. summers in the oberlin household for devyn following first and second year consisted of reading, ignoring her sister as much as possible, and isolating herself further. she spent most days holed up alone in her room, studying ahead until late at night and occupying her days with books and music. she rarely stepped out of the house unless it was necessary, a habit that her parents quickly picked up on and reprimanded her for, demanding that she find friends or a hobby that would get her out and about. devyn did nothing of the sort, and there wasn't much her parents could do to punish her considering she hardly left her room anyway. thus instead of grounding her, they managed to get her and danni in a room together for long enough that devyn eventually had to talk to her – because it had always been danni who'd made efforts to stay close to devyn even after she had pushed her away – and the hostility let up for a short while. devyn allowed her resolution to keep away from danni slide because for the first time in a long time she was actually having a bit of fun with her as they watched muggle movies together and chatted about their year group. they had majorly contrasting opinions on practically everything, and due to their strong personalities they both refused to budge either way. that likely should have been the warning signal that the newfound peace between them wouldn’t last for long. contrary to what her parents believed would happen, devyn fell into her usual school routine and went back to staying away from danni come third year, much to her sister’s confusion. devyn, however, changed her mind frequently, and she decided that the summer had been a one time thing that wouldn't happen again. just before christmas holidays, she took the huge step of dying her hair from blonde to dark brown because she was tired of being known throughout hogwarts as just danni oberlin's twin sister, and she knew her sister wasn't going to do anything any time soon that would set them apart. she grew to like her new hair color, at last feeling the individuality she'd needed since realizing that she and danni wouldn't be sticking together forever. danni and their parents didn't react particularly well to this development, but as always, devyn pretended like she couldn't bring herself to care. the reality was that she wanted them to understand where the motivation for change had come from – it wasn't a traditional case of teenage rebellion, it was more of her attempting to make an identity for herself outside of the one she’d been raised into. YOU SHOOT ME DOWN, BUT I WON’T FALL I AM TITANIUM the only real friend aside from damien that devyn made at hogwarts is louis weasley, and in time he also became her best friend. it was an unlikely friendship, because he’s a hufflepuff and embodies exactly the type of person she would typically be quick to dislike, but there was something about them that just clicked from when they initially bumped into one another, after devyn decided that he irritated her considerably less than the majority of her other classmates. they bickered endlessly from the start, finding pointless issues to argue over and then making a point to not own up to their faults or mistakes on principle. devyn grew to be fiercely yet secretly protective of louis just as she was of danni and damien, and it was nice for her to have someone else she cared about that could take her mind off things when all she tended to focus on was her schoolwork and perfectionist tendencies. she still went to extensive lengths to study and achieve top marks, but having both damien and louis to hang out with was definitely a plus. devyn began to receive attention from boys in third year, though she didn't give it much thought until a year or so later. this was around the same time that she started drinking in moderation and going to parties. being able to handle herself in large groups of people had never been a problem for her, but it was just that there was a high chance she didn't particularly like most of the people involved in social events, some more than others. her annoyance was based on various factors, the foremost usually being that she found people inferior and lacking in intelligence too much for her to communicate with them in any manner. when it came to boys, she naturally shot them down because firstly she wasn't used to people willingly approaching her as she already held a reputation as a bitch, and secondly she didn't understand why anyone would fancy her since she didn't think she was pretty and on top of that put zero effort into her clothes and make–up, which her sister continuously criticized her on when she'd ran out of other insults. devyn didn't bother wasting time on her appearance because she saw it as pointless, and the same went for boys who had the courage to flirt with her. CUT ME DOWN BUT IT’S YOU WHO’LL HAVE FURTHER TO FALL the first person that devyn fancied – but never fully acknowledged that she did – was sebastian nott, a slytherin in the year above her who happened to be a complete asshole. she had disliked him from the moment they'd first spoken to one another, but as time went on it was rather difficult for her to deny the truth of the matter, which was that he was good–looking and unattainable and she was attracted to him in a way she couldn't explain. despite how utterly infuriating he was, she wanted him anyways, having a tendency to go after things she knew she couldn't have. therefore when he began to flirt with her in addition to their usual arguments, she was hit with the realization that maybe she was simply over thinking things, and she began to flirt with him too. he was her first kiss in fourth year after they'd both had a couple drinks of firewhiskey, and she regretted that immediately after it occurred because of how horribly he treated her – or at least, in her opinion, him shrugging it off as no big deal was horrible, as she had no experience with boys prior to this and didn't know rejection was a possible thing that could take place after someone kissed you. she grew to intensely hate sebastian following their kiss, using every available opportunity to antagonize him, including an incident when she went as far as spilling milk all over his notes in the great hall when he ventured too close to her. unfortunately the kiss was the only thing that played in her mind on repeat day after day, so on impulse she asked louis to kiss her in public where she knew sebastian was watching them to get back at him. kissing one of her best friends wasn't something she'd ever thought of doing normally, but in that situation she felt it was a reasonable option and it turned out that it wasn't too bad, aside from the slight awkwardness afterwards. she and louis remained friends, however, putting that behind them until the summer before their fifth year, when she thought less and less about how much she hated sebastian and more about how much louis could nearly always take her mind off whatever was bothering her and make her laugh, and she ended up kissing louis again one day when she went over to his house to hang out at the beach. it was then that they realized they fancied each other, and their friendship quickly progressed into a relationship. devyn lost her virginity to louis that summer, and she's glad that she did because he trusted him more than anyone else. the two continued going out well into fifth year, having an additional excuse to spend time together because they had both been made prefects. they still had their fair share of fights, but these all got resolved before too long and none were as severe, of course, as the one that led to their break up. even though she was happier when she was with him than when she wasn't, devyn was the one who broke up with him in the end. she was devastated that he didn't trust her as much as she trusted him, and his reasoning was that he didn't trust sebastian around her, but she didn't see it that way. she had a difficult time dealing with the break up and avoided louis for several weeks after it, again throwing all of her attention into revising. she got all O's on her OWLs except for one E in herbology, which didn't let her sleep for a decent number of days until she put all her willpower into perfecting her work in herbology class to prepare for the following year's exams. during easter holidays, she met sebastian in her favorite ice cream parlor by chance and found she hated his guts more than ever because of the negative impact he'd had on her relationship with louis without even knowing he had. much to her shock, sebastian suggested that they be friends, and she was drawn in again because she was just too used to hating him and bickering with him to give it up. their 'friendship' was short lived and they retreated to hating one another as if nothing had changed, coming to terms with the reality that there was no world where they could realistically get along. the summer after fifth year, devyn managed to talk it out with louis, and though it was hard to get things exactly back to how they used to be, they were good friends again by the start of sixth year. she hadn't thought it was possible to miss someone as much as she missed him, because for a few months she'd lost him not only as a boyfriend but as a friend as well, so she’s immensely glad that he’s in her life again without any major complications or awkwardness between them. GHOST TOWN HAUNTED LOVE in one of many arguments with sebastian that took place in an empty corridor at hogwarts after their meeting in the ice cream parlor, devyn brought up that he was a terrible kisser because she thought it would hurt his ego the most – what she didn't think, though, was that he would kiss her on the spot to prove her wrong, which was precisely what he did. this escalated to them frequently sneaking around and snogging in broom cupboards, but they still vehemently hated one another and never let the other forget it. devyn enjoyed these secret meetings much more than she would ever own up to, and they went pretty far but never had sex because she always made him stop before they reached that point. her body was assuredly telling her that she wanted to go all the way with him, but when she wasn't preoccupied and could reflect rationally on the situation, her mind was telling her not to. she didn't trust him even slightly, and it was clear that all he wanted from her was sex and he would abandon her as soon as they actually slept together. it was the chase he liked, she knew, and there was a big part of her that was glad to see him so frustrated at her every denial. nonetheless, she wasn't positive what she wanted out of it all if not just sex, because no matter how much their physical relationship had progressed there was always something nagging at her, a strange reminder which would plague her every so often that she should have sex with him and be done with it so they could go back to simply hating one another. it took her a while to figure out that she fancied him – genuinely fancied him instead of just harboring the desire to prove that she could easily get with a hot guy. this was a dilemma, of course, because louis had been right in a way all along and now she was stuck with very inconvenient feelings for sebastian nott because it was obvious he didn't and wouldn't ever feel the same way, and moreover if he knew that she did then he would win and she would never hear the end of it. she kept her feelings a secret for so long that it sort of hurt a little bit – fooling around with him in broom cupboards and gathering up her clothes in a hurry afterwards to leave so she wouldn't say something unbearably stupid that would betray her emotions, and meanwhile him being his usual self and treating her like shit. by the end of her sixth year, he had drifted away on his own, avoiding her if he ever saw her and making up utterly unbelievable excuses as to why he couldn't see her anymore. she felt an odd ache at how abruptly things ended, but it made it a lot easier on her because he graduated not long after and she could breathe without worrying about him figuring her out. it’s currently the summer before devyn’s seventh year and so far it’s only taken her a couple of parties and drunken songs with boys whose names she doesn’t remember the next day to succeed in getting over her feelings for sebastian. she plans on being refreshed and motivated once seventh year rolls around, since she won’t have the burden of dealing with sebastian because his hogwarts career is now over, and she’s promising herself to not let any other boys take up her valuable time because she aspires to do even better on her NEWTs than she did on her OWLs. as time goes on, she’s also slowly patching things up with her sister, coming to the realization that danni isn’t half as bad as devyn has always made her out to be.
