DANIELLE ELENA OBERLIN
“You’re wrong. She is a phony. But on the other hand you’re right. She isn’t a phony because she’s a real phony. She believes all this crap she believes. You can’t talk her out of it.” Danielle Elena Oberlin is a romantic - while everybody else around her seems to be getting more and more cynical, try as she might she can't let go of what she's been hanging on to since she was a little girl. She's always delighted in movies and TV shows, the more romantic and less realistic the better. She's been curling up in her pretty-and-pink pajamas with her hair stuck into a messy bun mopping her eyes at Roman Holiday, or Tiffany's, or the Notebook ever since she can remember. She's not so foolish as to believe a Prince is going to wander into her life, direct his smolder towards her and sweep her off his feet and onto his horse and gallop her far, far away, but she'll still melt over any little romantic gesture. Roses, someone kissing her hand, affectionate pet-names - they make her squirm with pleasure and practically melt away with happiness. The girl is just fond of romance, that's all, and she stands very strongly by her cheesy, heart-rending movies. She's tried very hard to cover up her naivety, however, and although, when she was younger, a pretty face and a couple of nice words could fool her, they certainly don't anymore. She's always sort of angling for the perfection of the movies, however - her blonde hair is always perfectly in place, her make-up is always put on to perfection, her clothes are always highly fashionable and ludicrously well put-together. As for her nails, she'd rather die than bite them, and they're always painted to match her outfit, or the bow in her hair. Some may insist she's vain for these painstaking attempts to achieve perfection in looks, but she's always worried she's not attractive enough, and catching sight of herself in the mirror can practically send herself into a frenzy. That, and she simply likes clothes - she likes clothes, and she likes make-up, and she likes wearing little bows in her hair, and high-heels, and she likes almost everything pink, and slushy movies, and apparently she has the worst taste in music in the history of the world. No alternative bands for her, thank you. She likes her music cheesy, and happy, and pop. Danni has a habit of saying exactly what's on her mind, and wishing she didn't. She has terrible foot-in-mouth disease around people, and can often times come across incredibly blunt and insensitive. She's not, though - she's got one of the softest hearts you'll ever find, if you can bother to look past the Princess persona people seem to stick on her. She tells it like it is not because she considers herself tough, or cool, but more so because words just kind of pour out of her mouth before she can stop them and she can't do anything about it. She's an awful gossip, too - she can only be trusted with the most important secrets, because before you know it she'll have told someone else everything and then the entire school will know and she'll be practically tearing her hair out. She's a rubbish liar, and often comes clean if she ever does something wrong because she doesn't want to go through the embarrassment of attempting to lie. She blushes awfully and stammers when she does. Danni's a people person. She's sociable, she's bubbly, and although she can be terribly insecure and nervous, she can cover it up - years of practice - and get on with it. She parties in moderation, but rarely gets very, very drunk at parties. She likes having girls over for sleepovers and drinking with them and watching movies and spilling her guts and bounding around in a onesie. She also cares very much about what people think about her - she positively hates it if someone doesn't like her, even if it's someone that she doesn't particularly like. She's determined to the point of it being almost frightening if she wants someone to like her. She'll keep insisting and insisting and being fiercely nice to them until the point where they have to avoid her entirely. Danni's got a wicked temper when it's unleashed, though - it sort of flares dramatically and she'll go off in a tangent and then she'll realise what she's doing and fold back into herself and almost burst into tears if she thinks she's really offended someone. She thinks it's got something to do with being a Gryffindor - she's rash and too quick to judge and makes hasty decisions. But she can't bear hurting someone's feelings - honestly, even if she ticks someone off who she thinks deserves it, if they look upset she'll seek them out and try and get their forgiveness. She won't necessarily take it back, but usually when she's furious she goes too far and exaggerates to the point of no return. Danni, as a Gryffindor, is brave, but often times she doesn't feel it. She is brave, though - she can get terribly anxious, socially, but she always puts on her best smile and holds her head high and fakes like she knows what she's doing. She's also brave because, aside from the anxiety, she nearly always shows her true feelings. If she loves someone, they'll know it. If she's worried for someone, they'll know it. If she's angry at someone, they'll definitely know it, because she'll probably be fighting with them. Some people come to the conclusion that she's a bitch, and that hurts her more than anything, but she keeps herself grounded, and she keeps herself steady, and she just gets on with it, unless they pique her temper. Danni's not particularly academic. She does moderately well in lessons, and does work, but she's nothing special. She never gets O's, and E's are often difficult for her to come by, too. She dubs herself a 'dumb blonde', often with a laugh and a shake of her hair, but she'll never admit that she really does think she's a totally dumb blonde. She does Muggle Studies and Care of Magical Creatures as well as the core subjects, and they're her best ones - Muggle Studies because she thinks it's easy, Care of Magical Creatures because she adores animals. Her personal favourites are dragons, although she's never seen a real one, but she's read all about them and she's desperate to study them. They're the coolest things, and in all honesty she'd be perfectly content with a pet dragon. Sometimes she feels her parents are marginally disappointed by the fact that she's not an academic whiz, but she can't be sure if these feelings are accurate or not. Danni's family life is somewhat complicated. She adores her parents, although they're not very close at the moment - in ways, it's almost as though she forces herself to act closer with her parents, due to her lack of closeness with one Devyn Oberlin, also known as her twin sister. When Danni and Devyn were younger, they were almost inseparable - they did everything together and could barely be torn apart - but when they went to Hogwarts, things started changing rapidly. The twins began moving apart, as they were wont to do, with Danni sorted into Gryffindor (much to her shock) and Devyn into Slytherin (that wasn't particularly shocking) and the two finding themselves in different social circles. They were as different as two girls could be, on the surface; Danni was cheerful and sociable and giggly, and Devyn was colder, ambitious, almost closed-off. Danni, in desperation, tried to cling to Devyn, but it simply didn't work, and when Devyn dyed her hair brown Danni couldn't help but be deeply displeased and somewhat hurt. It was almost as though she was trying to prove just how much she didn't want to be like Danni, didn't even want to look like her. And so Danni turned up her nose and the two girls rarely spoke during term-time. Danni would often feel a pang when she saw Devyn in the corridors, but she was too proud to approach the girl and beg to be friends again, knowing full well that Devyn would say something snarky and hurt her feelings. And that pride made Danni almost as cold as Devyn; she stuck to her own friends and laughed and chattered and gossiped and ignored her sister. Every now and then, though, Danni broke down and simply had to try at Devyn to make friends again, and in her sixth year she even made progress, getting Devyn to meet her in the Room of Requirement with her and discussing their love lives. Danni was thrilled by this, even though Devyn infuriated her at the same time. Determined as ever, Danni was sure that with just another push, Devyn could be convinced to be her friend again. Danni and Devyn could be described as polar opposites to an outside viewer, but in reality, they share certain qualities. They're both clever, although Devyn excels at school and Danni certainly does not; they're both prideful and stubborn; they both say what they're thinking, although Danni more so due to the fact that she can't shut up for a second. And they're both deeply insecure, underneath the outside facade; both of them truly believe the other is more attractive, more beloved, better. Danni's love life is colourful, if nothing else. She's never really found anyone she's properly connected with, but she's been on dates with a huge number of guys. She develops crushes very quickly, but often goes off someone after a date or two. It's not out of nastiness, but she builds people up an extraordinary amount in her head and is always left slightly disappointed. She's had a fair amount of boyfriends, but she uses the term loosely - they never last more than a few weeks. This could prompt some people to suggest she's promiscuous, but she's never gone further than snogging, and the thought of it is sort of off-putting. She's definitely embarrassed by the fact that she's so virginal, but she's sort of glad that she never caved and just did it to get it over with. She'd never tell anyone, but she wants it to mean something. Not true, true love, but a lovely boy, a nice setting, someone who really cares about her. She'd probably cry her eyes out if it was on a drunken night out. Her last year of Hogwarts is approaching, and she's terrified about the future, and she'll tell everyone. She doesn't have a clue what she wants to do. Correction - she knows what she wants, she just doesn't think she'll be able to get it. She wants to study dragons. And she doesn't have a clue how to tell anyone that, because she's sure they'll sneer at her daintiness and her squeamishness and laugh themselves silly. But she can't bear the thought of a boring office job or working in a shop or something along those lines - she has an adventurous, mischievous streak that shows itself every now and then. The only thing she's good at is working with animals - that, and managing to retain perfect balance in three-inch heels and putting together a beautiful outfit in a matter of seconds - and it's the one thing that she really wants to pursue. She wants the last year to be memorable, too. Filled with parties and laughter and a reconciliation with her sister and somewhat good grades. And - although she'll never voice this wish - she wants to find her first love. Or something along those lines - something more serious. She wants a boyfriend who'll last more than a few months, a boyfriend who she'll be able to tell all of her worries and her fears, a boyfriend who can help her decide which heels are appropriate for the event they're going to. She tries to stifle her over-romanticized view of love, but it's hard - she's been dreaming love stories since her childhood days and, as much as she knows that nothing's ever perfect, she can't help but wish that it was.
